What is a release manager?

Release Managers are professionals responsible for overseeing the planning, scheduling, and control of software build releases within an organization. They coordinate between development, quality assurance, and operations teams to ensure that new software versions are released smoothly and on schedule. Their work helps minimize disruptions to users and ensures that software updates are thoroughly tested and documented. Release Managers also manage risks and resolve issues that may arise during the release process.

What are some common challenges faced by release managers during software deployment cycles?

Release Managers often encounter challenges such as coordinating across multiple teams to ensure all deliverables are ready on schedule, managing last-minute changes or bug fixes, and mitigating deployment risks. Additionally, they must balance the need for rapid releases with maintaining stability and minimizing downtime. Effective communication and proactive problem-solving are key to overcoming these obstacles and ensuring successful releases.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a release manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Release Manager, you need expertise in software development lifecycle management, version control, and release planning, typically supported by a background in computer science or IT. Familiarity with tools like Jenkins, Git, Jira, and CI/CD pipelines is crucial, along with relevant certifications such as ITIL or Agile/Scrum. Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and effective communication set top performers apart in this role. These capabilities are essential to ensure smooth, timely, and error-free software releases that support business objectives and minimize risk.

Job description

Description

Primary Purpose

Under the direction of the Manager, this role supports Release Management activities by coordinating releases, projects, system changes, and implementation efforts across multiple teams and stakeholders. The contractor helps ensure that release processes are effectively planned, communicated, tracked, and executed to support organizational objectives, customer expectations, and operational readiness. This role partners with internal and external teams to manage dependencies, schedules, testing activities, and release deliverables across complex, cross-functional initiatives.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Release Planning & Coordination
    • Support the Release Manager in coordinating releases, multiple projects, and system changes.
    • Coordinate multiple project deliverables and products to ensure they function together as an integrated release solution.
    • Support the release lifecycle for complex, multidisciplinary, large-scale, and cross-departmental releases.
    • Coordinate implementation activities for releases, projects, and enhancements.
    • Coordinate releases and activities in alignment with organizational goals, customer expectations, and operational requirements.
  • Project Tracking & Dependency Management
    • Track key milestones and target dates to help ensure releases remain on schedule.
    • Monitor release and project deliverables, target dates, and completion status for internal and external delivery and support teams.
    • Partner with delivery teams to identify, manage, and track interdependencies between projects and system changes.
    • Support the development and maintenance of release plans, processes, and procedures that improve delivery effectiveness and implementation success.
  • Stakeholder Communication & Readiness
    • Coordinate communications to provide visibility into delivery processes, release plans, project progress, dependencies, and readiness status.
    • Support regular stakeholder communications through established release readiness meetings.
    • Track and communicate milestone achievement, risks, issues, and readiness indicators to stakeholders and project teams.
  • Testing & Implementation Support
    • Coordinate scheduling and testing activities in shared test environments to ensure required release functionality is deployed and validated.
    • Support implementation readiness activities and verify completion of pre-deployment and post-deployment requirements.
    • Facilitate coordination between release, testing, and support teams to ensure successful deployments.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration
    • Coordinate with internal and external development teams, customers, business units, and support organizations to support the development and implementation of new systems and enhancements to existing systems.
    • Foster collaboration across multiple teams to ensure alignment on release schedules, dependencies, and implementation activities.
  • Corporate Responsibilities
    • Adhere to organizational values, policies, procedures, and safety requirements.
    • Support continuous improvement efforts that enhance release management processes, communication, and delivery outcomes.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

The function itself is not new, but the client is expanding release management beyond the PMO to support all technology groups. The goal is to create more consistency, governance, and maturity across release processes throughout the organization. This person will be assisting with that effort and less on true coordination tasks.

They seek a confident, driven, and engaging individual who can share opinions without being aggressive, thrives in a dynamic, fast-paced environment, and possesses consultative skills to work effectively across departments.
