Regional Coding Manager information

What is a regional coding manager?

Regional Coding Managers are professionals responsible for overseeing the medical coding processes across multiple healthcare facilities within a specific geographic region. They ensure coding accuracy, compliance with regulations, and consistency in medical record documentation. Their duties often include managing coding staff, implementing training programs, auditing coding work, and collaborating with other healthcare administrators to improve coding efficiency and quality. Regional Coding Managers play a critical role in optimizing revenue cycle management and reducing billing errors in healthcare organizations.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a regional coding manager?

To thrive as a Regional Coding Manager, you need in-depth knowledge of medical coding standards (such as ICD-10, CPT) and a relevant certification like CCS or CPC, coupled with experience in healthcare coding management. Familiarity with coding software, electronic health records (EHR) systems, and compliance auditing tools is typically required. Strong leadership, attention to detail, and effective communication are essential soft skills for managing coding teams across multiple locations. These skills and qualifications ensure accurate coding practices, regulatory compliance, and efficient team performance across the region.

How does a regional coding manager collaborate with multiple facility teams to ensure coding accuracy and compliance?

A Regional Coding Manager frequently works with coding teams from various facilities to standardize coding practices and ensure compliance with regulatory guidelines. This often involves conducting regular audits, organizing training sessions, and facilitating communication between site-specific coders and upper management. Effective collaboration requires strong organizational skills and the ability to adapt to different workflows across locations. Managers also serve as the primary contact for resolving complex coding issues, ensuring consistent quality and accuracy throughout the region.

What is the difference between Regional Coding Manager vs Regional Coding Specialist?

Be Part of Something New

This is a newly created role born out of an exciting new partnership between Lee Health and a regional healthcare system, focused on advancing physician education around HCC coding and Epic support. As the HCC Coding Educator, you won't be stepping into a role that's already been defined for years you'll help shape it. This is a rare opportunity to bring your ideas to the table, influence how this program grows, and work with a team that genuinely wants your feedback and collaboration from day one.

Relocating? We'll Help.

If you're considering a move to Fort Myers, this role comes with meaningful support to make that transition easier:

  • $7,500 sign-on bonus
  • Up to $10,000 in relocation assistance

Southwest Florida offers year-round sunshine, Gulf Coast beaches, a lower cost of living than much of the country, and no state income tax making Fort Myers an easy place to put down roots.

What You'll Do

You'll partner directly with physicians and Physician Group offices across the Fort Myers and Cape Coral area, providing hands-on education and support to improve the accuracy, completeness, and compliance of risk-adjustment documentation. Your work will directly support Medicare Advantage, ACO, and other value-based care contracts helping ensure HCC capture reflects true patient acuity while meeting CMS and payer audit standards.

You'll serve as a trusted coding and documentation resource for providers, care management teams, and compliance leadership, with real ownership over how education is delivered and refined across the network.

Epic experience matters in this role. In addition to HCC coding education, you'll have the opportunity to identify Epic workflows that could improve provider efficiencies in HCC coding and documentation . Reinforcing best practices for capturing accurate, compliant documentation directly at the point of care. Candidates who are comfortable in Epic and can confidently guide providers will be especially well-suited to this role.

You Won't Be Doing This Alone

This role comes with a strong support system built in:

  • A dedicated Physician Coder to partner with
  • Shared resources and collaboration with our partner health system
  • Ongoing training and guidance from the Risk Adjustment team, IT Education team, and the Center for Care Transformation

Whether you're troubleshooting a documentation question or navigating HCC workflows, you'll have colleagues around you who want you to succeed.

Schedule & Location

This is a hybrid role with a home base at our Orion Building, where you'll have your own dedicated cubicle. Plan on 2 to 3 days/week onsite at Lee Physician Group locations across Fort Myers and Cape Coral, with remaining days remote. Mileage between locations is reimbursed.

What We're Looking For

Education: Associate's degree in Health Information Management, Nursing, Healthcare Administration, or a related field required.

Experience:

  • Minimum 3 years of experience in HCC coding and risk adjustment
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in Medicare Advantage, MSSP, ACO, or other value-based care models
  • Demonstrated experience providing provider education or coding feedback
  • Experience reviewing outpatient clinical documentation for risk adjustment
  • Experience with Epic strongly preferred; ability to support and educate providers on Epic documentation workflows
