Job description

Assistant Women's Basketball Coach

The University of Lynchburg, a private, regional university in the beautiful foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Central Virginia, is seeking applicants for a full-time, Assistant women's basketball coach. 

This position reports to, is supervised by, and evaluated by the Head Women's Basketball Coach. It will include the specific duties and responsibilities of this position description plus employee attitude and general working behavior.

Job Type: Full Time

Job Purpose: The full time women's basketball assistant coach provides support and leadership in all aspects of developing highly successful programs primarily focused on instruction and mentorship for student athletes. The women's basketball assistant is expected to be fully integrated into the life of the program, the athletics department and university mission. The position is an avenue to empower and build lives through the avenue of college athletics. 

Job Duties:

Administrative and Team Operations (Traditional Championship Season)
  • Collaborate with the Head Coach to plan and execute daily team practices.
  • Lead individual and small-group practice sessions as assigned by the Head Coach.
  • Prepare and organize equipment for individual and team drills.
  • Provide individualized skill instruction and constructive feedback during practices and competitions.
  • Deliver team-wide instruction and performance feedback throughout practices and competitions.
  • Evaluate daily team performance and identify areas for improvement and future development.
  • Coordinate strength and conditioning activities in collaboration with the Strength and Conditioning staff.
  • Assist with the development and management of the program's social media platforms by promoting team achievements, activities, and culture.
  • Prepare scouting reports, opponent evaluations, and performance/time standard analyses.
Competition Responsibilities
  • Coordinate competition logistics, including travel arrangements, meals, itineraries, and other assigned responsibilities.
  • Take an active leadership role during pre-competition preparation and warm-up sessions.
  • Provide coaching, instruction, and performance feedback throughout competitions.
  • Foster a positive, encouraging environment by providing consistent motivation and support to student-athletes.
Non-Traditional Season Responsibilities
  • Coordinate with the Strength and Conditioning Coach to monitor and support off-season training programs.
  • Manage equipment setup, maintenance, and inventory.
  • Oversee the distribution, collection, and inventory of team apparel and equipment.
  • Schedule and conduct individual student-athlete meetings as directed.
  • Assist with the development of the team's annual competition schedule and travel planning.
  • Coordinate required team paperwork, certifications, and compliance documentation with the Athletics Department.
  • Maintain required driver authorization and eligibility for team travel.
Annual Program Responsibilities
  • Assist in planning and coordinating special events, camps, clinics, and community service initiatives.
  • Coordinate overnight recruiting visits for prospective student-athletes.
  • Develop and maintain communications with student-athlete families and program alumni.
  • Manage uniform distribution, collection, replacement, and inventory.
  • Coordinate team apparel selection, ordering, and organization.
  • Assist in planning and executing official and unofficial campus visit days.
Recruiting Responsibilities
  • Develop proficiency in the department's recruiting database and recruiting software.
  • Maintain accurate records of prospective, accepted, and enrolled student-athletes.
  • Track campus visits and recruiting activities for prospective student-athletes.
  • Maintain timely and accurate communication records with prospective student-athletes, families, coaches, and recruiting contacts.
  • Respond promptly to recruiting inquiries and correspondence.
  • Identify and evaluate prospective student-athletes through recruiting platforms, showcases, competitions, and other recruiting opportunities.
  • Monitor recruit progress and maintain updated recruiting evaluations.
  • Coordinate and distribute recruiting communications regarding camps, events, and campus activities.
  • Participate in Open House and other university recruiting events.
  • Meet with prospective student-athletes and their families during campus visits.
  • Conduct campus tours and assist with recruiting presentations as assigned.
  • Attend showcases, tournaments, and high school or club competitions to evaluate prospective student-athletes.
Budget Administration
  • Assist the Head Coach in developing and managing the annual operating budget in accordance with Athletics Department guidelines.
  • Maintain accurate financial records and ensure expenditures remain within approved budget parameters.
  • Coordinate the timely purchasing, inventory, and maintenance of uniforms, equipment, and supplies while exercising sound fiscal responsibility.
External Relations and Program Promotion
  • Build and maintain positive relationships with alumni, prospective student-athletes, families, donors, and community partners.
  • Support fundraising, alumni engagement, and program outreach initiatives through regular communication and relationship building.
  • Promote and enhance the visibility and reputation of the Lynchburg Women's Basketball program within the university and the broader basketball community.
Additional Responsibilities
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Athletics.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to fostering an inclusive, respectful, and diverse athletic environment.
  • Support departmental compliance with NCAA, institutional, conference, and Title IX policies and regulations.
  • Represent the Athletics Department and the University in a professional manner at all times.

Starting Salary: $38,000- $48,000
