To thrive as a Recovery Cafe staff member, you need a solid understanding of addiction recovery principles, experience in peer support or counseling, and often a background in social work or related fields. Familiarity with case management systems, recovery planning tools, and certifications like Certified Peer Specialist (CPS) can be highly beneficial. Exceptional listening, empathy, and conflict resolution skills help build trust and foster a supportive community environment. These skills and qualities are crucial for empowering members on their recovery journey and maintaining a safe, inclusive space.

What is a Recovery Cafe?

A Recovery Cafe is a supportive community center designed for people recovering from addiction, mental health challenges, homelessness, or trauma. Unlike traditional treatment centers, Recovery Cafes offer a safe, judgment-free space where members can connect, participate in peer-led groups, and access resources like meals, classes, and support services. The focus is on building relationships and fostering long-term recovery through community and mutual support.

What are some common challenges faced by staff working at a Recovery Cafe, and how can they be addressed?

Staff at a Recovery Cafe often encounter challenges such as supporting individuals with diverse recovery backgrounds, managing group dynamics, and maintaining healthy boundaries while fostering a welcoming environment. It is important to practice active listening, attend regular training in trauma-informed care, and participate in peer supervision to navigate these challenges effectively. Collaboration with other support services and ongoing professional development can also enhance staff capacity to respond to guests' needs while maintaining their own well-being.

Job description

About Us

We're a full-service breakfast café serving American and Mexican diner-style favorites with sit-down table service. We have 16 tables, and we're a busy single-location operation where quality food, fast tickets, and warm hospitality all matter. Our manager is a working leader — someone who can run the floor, jump on the line during a rush, and pull a clean shot of espresso when the bar gets slammed.

Position Summary

The Café Manager owns the day-to-day operation of the café: leading the front- and back-of-house teams, hitting labor and cost targets, keeping food and service quality high, and making sure every guest leaves happy. This is a hands-on role. You'll spend most of your day on the floor, not behind a desk, and you'll be expected to step into any station when the team needs you.

Key Responsibilities

Operations & Service

  • Run smooth, well-paced shifts across breakfast and brunch rushes with quality table service.
  • Open and/or close the café, including cash handling, deposits, and end-of-day reconciliation.
  • Maintain cleanliness, health-code compliance, and food-safety standards throughout the space.
  • Troubleshoot service issues in real time and personally recover guest experiences when needed.

Kitchen / Line

  • Step onto the cook line during peak volume to keep tickets moving and times down and break kitchen staff when needed
  • Oversee prep levels, food quality, and portion control.

Coffee / Bar

  • Cover the espresso bar as needed and maintain drink-quality standards.
  • Train baristas on dial-in, drink builds, and speed of service.

Team Leadership

  • Hire, schedule, train, and develop front- and back-of-house staff.
  • Build schedules that match staffing to forecasted volume while managing labor cost.
  • Coach the team on hospitality, ticket times, and teamwork; handle performance conversations directly.

Financial & Inventory

  • Manage food, beverage, and labor costs against targets to protect margins.
  • Place orders, receive deliveries, manage vendor relationships, and control inventory and waste.
  • Review daily sales, track key numbers, and adjust to hit weekly and monthly goals.
Required Qualifications
  • 2+ years of restaurant or café management experience, ideally in a breakfast, brunch, or high-volume table-service setting.
  • Line / kitchen experience — able to work a cook station and hold the line during a rush.
  • Barista experience — able to run the espresso bar and train others on it.
  • Strong understanding of labor scheduling, food cost, and inventory management.
  • Proven ability to lead, train, and motivate a team in a fast-paced environment.
  • Food-handler / food-safety certification (or ability to obtain before start).
  • Comfortable with POS systems, cash handling, and basic reporting.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Familiarity with Mexican breakfast cuisine and traditional preparations.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) a strong plus.
  • Experience opening or managing a single-location, owner-operated café.
Schedule & Physical Requirements
  • Early-morning availability; weekends and holidays required (breakfast is our peak).
  • Able to stand, walk, and work on your feet for full shifts.
  • Able to lift up to 50 lbs and work in a hot kitchen environment.
Compensation & Benefits
  • Paid time off
  • 401k
  • Healthcare benefits
  • Equity in the business
