React Native New Grad information

What is a React Native new grad?

A React Native New Grad is an entry-level developer who has recently graduated from college or a coding bootcamp and specializes in building mobile applications using the React Native framework. React Native allows developers to create cross-platform mobile apps for iOS and Android using JavaScript and React. New grads in this field typically work on projects under the guidance of senior developers, learning best practices, and gaining hands-on experience with mobile app development. They contribute to building, testing, and maintaining apps while expanding their technical and problem-solving skills.

What are some typical challenges a new grad might face when starting out as a React Native developer?

As a new grad entering a React Native role, you may encounter challenges such as understanding the nuances between iOS and Android development, efficiently debugging cross-platform issues, and staying up to date with rapidly evolving libraries and tools. You'll also need to adapt to collaborative workflows, like using version control and code review systems, which are essential for team-based development. However, most teams provide mentorship and onboarding resources to help new developers ramp up and succeed in their first projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a React Native new grad, and why are they important?

To excel as a React Native New Grad, you need a solid understanding of JavaScript, React, and mobile development principles, supported by a relevant degree or coding bootcamp experience. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, mobile debugging tools, and package managers such as npm or Yarn is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help new grads collaborate and adapt in team environments. These abilities ensure that you can build reliable mobile apps, work efficiently with others, and quickly learn on the job.

Job description

Your role in our mission
At Prosper, we're building the technology that makes borrowing simpler, faster, and more transparent. Our vision is to advance financial well-being by democratizing access to credit -- meeting people wherever they are, on any device. We're looking for exceptional talent to help us get there.
As a Senior Frontend Engineer on the Personal Loans team, you will own the borrower-facing experiences that drive Prosper's core business -- from rate check through funding. Using modern web and mobile technologies, you will build and maintain the applications that guide borrowers through one of the most important financial decisions they'll make. Your work will directly impact conversion, borrower satisfaction, and Prosper's top-line growth.
We are investing heavily in AI across our engineering organization -- from AI-assisted development workflows to intelligent borrower experiences. You'll be joining a team that actively embraces AI tools to accelerate delivery, improve code quality, and explore new ways to make the borrower journey smarter and more personalized.
How you'll make an impact
  • Collaborate within a cross-functional team that includes product, design, backend engineering, and quality engineers to deliver seamless borrower experiences across web and mobile.
  • Own projects end to end -- from technical design and architecture through launch, iteration, and measurement -- driving outcomes that move the business forward.
  • Build and evolve our React and React Native applications within a pnpm/Turborepo monorepo, shipping features that work beautifully on every platform.
  • Design and maintain shared component libraries and cross-platform modules that accelerate development across multiple product teams.
  • Partner with backend and platform engineering teams to integrate with GraphQL and RESTful APIs in a performant, reliable, and secure manner.
  • Identify and drive improvements in performance, testing, accessibility, and developer experience that make the entire team more effective.
  • Uphold high standards of code quality and user experience while iterating rapidly in a regulated environment.
  • Leverage AI-powered tools (coding assistants, automated testing, code review) to amplify your productivity and help establish best practices for AI-assisted development across the team.
  • Contribute to a strong, inclusive engineering culture by mentoring peers, championing best practices, and participating in thoughtful code reviews.

Skills that will help you thrive
  • BS in EE/CS with 8+ years of experience or MS in EE/CS or other applicable disciplines with 6+ years of experience
  • Deep proficiency in React, React Native, and TypeScript, with the versatility to move seamlessly between web and mobile platforms if applicable.
  • Hands-on experience with GraphQL (Apollo) and RESTful APIs to power high-performance applications.
  • Familiarity with monorepos (pnpm, Turborepo), bundlers (Vite), and CI/CD pipelines to maintain a high-velocity development environment.
  • Disciplined approach to automated testing using tools like Jest, Playwright, or Detox to ensure systems are meticulous and trustworthy.
  • Active use of AI coding assistants (Cursor, Copilot) and a commitment to exploring new AI developments to enhance team productivity and solve product problems.
  • A sharp eye for UX/UI polish, ensuring high-stakes financial flows feel intuitive, professional, and reliable.
  • A proactive, high-accountability approach to driving projects to completion and unblocking yourself to deliver outcomes, not just outputs.
  • A deep focus on the "borrower behind the screen," sweating the details to maintain trust in a domain where financial accuracy is paramount.
  • Excellence in cross-functional communication and a dedication to elevating the team through clear mentorship and knowledge sharing.

Extra credit
  • Experience with Expo and mobile deployment workflows (App Store, Google Play).
  • Familiarity with cross-platform styling systems (Tamagui, styled-components).
  • Background in fintech, lending, or other regulated industries.
  • Experience with feature flagging, A/B testing, and data-driven product development.
  • Native mobile development experience (Swift/Kotlin).

Resources to help you prosper
  • A hybrid connection: We believe in the "best of both worlds" - a hybrid environment (2 days/week in our SF office) that balances high-touch collaboration with the flexibility of remote work.
  • Invested in your future: A competitive salary and a 401(k) with a 5% company match to help you build long-term financial security.
  • Holistic well-being: We provide the resources you need to thrive, from flexible time off and paid parental leave to an annual wellness allowance and comprehensive health coverage.
  • Professional & personal growth: Take advantage of a suite of premium perks, including Udemy access, childcare assistance, pet insurance, and a bevy of additional savings through Beneplace.

Interview Process
  • Recruiter Call: A brief screening to discuss your experience and initial questions
  • Technical Interview: Deeper dive into coding skills.
  • Team Interview: Meet team members for collaborative discussions, problem-solving, or technical exercises.

$173,000 - $205,000 a year
The salary for this position is $173,000 - $205,000 annually, plus bonus and generous benefits. In determining your salary, we will consider your location, experience, and other job-related factors.
