What is the difference between Tauri vs Front-End Developer?

AspectTauriFront-End Developer
Primary RoleBuilds desktop applications using web technologies with a focus on security and performanceCreates and maintains websites and web applications for various platforms
Required SkillsRust, JavaScript, HTML, CSS, knowledge of desktop app developmentHTML, CSS, JavaScript, frameworks like React or Angular
Work EnvironmentSoftware development teams, often in tech companies or startupsWeb development teams, agencies, or freelance work
Industry UsageTech, software development, desktop app marketWeb design, digital marketing, e-commerce

While Tauri focuses on building secure desktop applications with web technologies, Front-End Developers primarily create websites and web apps. Both roles require knowledge of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, but Tauri developers also need Rust skills and familiarity with desktop app development. The work environments overlap in tech companies, but their end products differ significantly.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Tauri Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Tauri Developer, you need strong proficiency in JavaScript or TypeScript, a solid understanding of Rust, and experience with front-end frameworks like React or Vue. Familiarity with the Tauri framework, Node.js, and build tools, as well as knowledge of security best practices, is typically required. Excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are important soft skills in this role. These abilities ensure the creation of secure, performant, and user-friendly desktop applications that meet project requirements and industry standards.

What are Tauri developers?

Tauri developers are software engineers or programmers who specialize in building desktop applications using the Tauri framework. Tauri is an open-source toolkit that allows developers to create lightweight, secure, and cross-platform desktop apps using web technologies like HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, while leveraging Rust for the backend. These developers are skilled in both frontend and backend coding and are familiar with integrating web-based user interfaces into native desktop environments. Their work often involves optimizing applications for performance, security, and cross-platform compatibility.

What are some common challenges developers face when building desktop applications with Tauri?

Developers using Tauri often encounter challenges related to integrating web technologies with native system capabilities. Ensuring smooth communication between the frontend (built with frameworks like React or Vue) and the Rust-based backend can require careful handling of APIs and security permissions. Additionally, optimizing application performance while maintaining a small bundle size is a key focus, as Tauri is known for its lightweight footprint. Collaboration with designers and QA teams is also important to test cross-platform compatibility and deliver a polished user experience.

Job description

Senior Rust Fullstack Engineer
Location: Los Angeles (Hybrid)
Salary: $200,000 + equity
Equity: 0.5-1%
Please note: Due to the nature of this role, we cannot offer visa sponsorship at this time.
The Opportunity
My client is a well-funded, early-stage technology company building mission-critical software for the aviation industry. Their platform powers real-time, data-driven decision-making for airline operations teams and pilots-where performance, safety, and reliability truly matter.
After a strong year of growth and recently closing a seed round, they are expanding their engineering team and are seeking a Senior Rust Fullstack Engineer to help build and scale foundational products used by airline operations worldwide.
This is an opportunity to join early, take meaningful ownership of core systems, and work on complex, real-world problems at the intersection of systems engineering, data visualization, and user experience.
What You'll Be Working On
  • Developing real-time recommendation systems surfaced directly to pilots and operations teams
  • Designing and implementing highly interactive, data-dense UIs used in high-stakes operational environments (similar in complexity to an IDE)
  • Working on a desktop application built with Rust, Tauri, and TypeScript/React, deployed directly to customer machines
  • Contributing to a second product extending the platform into a mobile (iPad) application for pilots
  • Solving challenging problems around real-time data processing, visualization, and system performance
  • Influencing architectural decisions across backend, middleware, and frontend systems

Tech Stack
  • Backend / Systems: Rust
  • Frontend: TypeScript, React
  • App Framework: Tauri (open to alternative approaches with the right experience)
  • Focus Areas: Performance, scalability, real-time data, complex visualization

What My Client Is Looking For
  • Strong experience building performance-critical, data-intensive systems
  • Proven background using Rust in real-world, production environments
  • Experience with TypeScript and React; Tauri experience is a plus but not required
  • Comfortable working across the stack and owning features end-to-end
  • Systems-minded engineer with a deep care for performance, architecture, and scalability
  • Experience building desktop applications; mobile experience is a bonus

Culture & Why This Role Stands Out
  • Recently closed a seed round and is well-capitalized for the next several years
  • Already partnered with major customers, with additional demand actively coming in
  • Small, flat, collaborative engineering team with real ownership and autonomy
  • Engineers are trusted to shape architecture, product direction, and technical standards
  • Opportunity to help establish a UI-focused engineering hub in West Hollywood
  • Ideal for someone who wants long-term ownership over core systems built from the ground up

Benefits
  • Medical, Dental, Vision (80% individual coverage, 50% family coverage)
  • Unlimited PTO + company shutdown between Christmas and New Year
  • 401(k) plan (no match currently)
  • Relocation support available for the right candidate

Interview Process
  • Interview with the CEO
  • Interview with the Technical Lead
  • Interview with a senior engineer focused on optimization and backend systems
  • Conversational process - no whiteboard or live coding exercises
  • Fast-moving process with decisions made at this stage
