Job description

Rail Yard Switch Operator

Primarily responsible for directing trains within the rail yard. Their primary responsibility is to control the movement of trains by operating switches. This involves ensuring that trains are properly routed onto the correct track, connecting and disconnecting railcars, and coordinating with the rail operators to ensure the smooth flow of operations.

Essential Functions

  • Inspecting tracks and equipment for safety hazards
  • Acts as the primary ground spotter for rail king operator when switching railcars
  • Works in conjunction with the Rail Lead to complete intra-yard railcar switches to supplement TGS
  • Coordinates with Rail Lead to ensure rail equipment is kept in working condition
  • Support the blending and packaging operations during any downtime by connecting hoses, collecting samples, building boxes, etc.
  • Execute assignments in an accurate, timely, and safe manner
  • Perform any additional duties as assigned by the Rail Manager or Operations Manager

Knowledge / Qualifications / Skills / Experience

  • Minimum 2 years rail operations experience, including experience operating a locomotive
  • Functional understanding of the processes, procedures, and safety requirements necessary for working in a rail yard and operating a locomotive.
  • Experience using railcar management and warehouse management systems a plus
  • Proficient computer skills
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Good math, language, and reading skills
  • Functional knowledge of a warehouse environment
  • Considerate and respectful to coworkers
  • Able to follow instructions given for daily tasks

Education Requirements:

  • High School Diploma/GED

Physical Requirements:

  • A variety of standing, sitting and walking is required throughout the day, including extended periods of time working outside on your feet
  • Ability to operate heavy machinery and equipment
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced warehouse setting
