What is an RF drive test engineer?

An RF Drive Test Engineer is responsible for testing and optimizing wireless networks by conducting drive tests to measure signal quality, coverage, and network performance. They use specialized tools and software to collect and analyze data, identifying issues like call drops, low signal strength, and interference. Their work helps improve network quality, optimize coverage, and ensure compliance with industry standards. RF Drive Test Engineers typically collaborate with network engineers and technicians to implement necessary improvements and troubleshoot network problems.

What does an RF drive test engineer do?

As an RF Drive Test Engineer, you will typically spend your days planning and conducting drive tests, which involve collecting and analyzing live network data to assess coverage, identify interference, and solve connectivity issues. You may work independently in the field or as part of a team, collaborating closely with network optimization, planning, and field operations teams. Your work often involves creating detailed reports and recommending network improvements based on your findings. This role occasionally requires travel and flexible hours, especially when optimizing networks in different geographic locations. Over time, experienced engineers can advance into senior roles, specialize in network optimization, or transition to RF design or project management positions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an RF drive test engineer?

To thrive as an RF Drive Test Engineer, you need a solid understanding of wireless communication principles, radio frequency (RF) measurements, and a relevant engineering degree or equivalent experience. Proficiency with drive test tools such as TEMS, Nemo, or Agilent, along with knowledge of network optimization software, is crucial, and certifications like CCNA or OEM-specific training are often preferred. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, good communication, and problem-solving skills make someone stand out in this position. These abilities ensure effective identification and resolution of network issues, leading to improved network performance and customer satisfaction.

This position is critical to moving products from development through qualification, ramp, and production. The candidate should come from a semiconductor background with a proven track record of shipping in high-volume production. The position is responsible for developing and overseeing testing of cutting-edge RF integrated passive devices (IPD) and advanced system-in-package (SiP) modules.
Primary Responsibilities
  • Development of test platforms to evaluate standard RF devices such as filters, couplers, inductors, capacitors, and interposers.
  • Support NPI introduction and work with customers and applications engineers to understand and drive testing and data requirements.
  • Coordinate with operations and manage production wafer acceptance testing and final test. Manage daily priorities and activities of technicians to ensure high test throughput. Support process development, yield improvement, and reliability.
  • Perform data analysis and present results to members of the engineering team and upper management.
  • Automate measurements, testing, and analysis using software tools such as Python and JMP. Automate data analysis and acceptance testing for high-volume manufacturing.
  • Use measurement equipment such as vector network analyzers, source meters, and digital multimeters to fully characterize electrical devices. Provide recommendations on equipment procurement as needed.
  • Design and build support fixtures, test setups, and harnesses for RF devices on wafers and evaluation boards.
  • Design PCBs, sockets, probe cards, and other electrical test interfaces for product-level, in-line, and reliability testing.
  • Support wafer backend activities on assembly, dicing, AOI, and T&R. Coordinate module and SMT assembly as needed for NPI prototype development.
  • Coach technicians and engineers on RF, electrical, and reliability test procedures and practices.
  • Perform additional functions or requirements as assigned.

Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering required; master's degree in electrical engineering preferred.
  • 5+ years of RF testing experience.
  • Previous experience in a semiconductor manufacturing environment and familiarity with manual and automated wafer probers.
