Job Description

The Opportunity: 

Mattel is currently seeking a Quality Engineer II in El Segundo, CA. This role is a key member of the corporate Quality Engineering leadership team, reporting to the Sr. Manager of Quality Engineering .  This role supports global brand teams and works cross-functionally with Product Development, Design, Packaging, Regulations, Play Labs, Quality Data Analytics, and Manufacturing partners.

The Quality Engineer II contributes to product development from concept through launch, ensuring toys and consumer products meet global safety regulations and internal quality standards. This role also supports investigation of product issues and drives improvements based on consumer feedback and field performance. The position operates with minimal supervision and requires strong technical judgment, data analysis, and cross-functional collaboration.

What Your Impact Will Be: 

  • Support development and maintenance of Product Requirement Documents (PRDs) and Primary Concerns Documents (PCDs) within eQMS systems, ensuring alignment with product safety, performance, and play expectations
  • Translate product concepts, play patterns, and consumer use conditions into effective test plans, including mechanical, physical, chemical, and abuse testing requirements
  • Participate in concept and design reviews, providing input on safety, durability, regulatory compliance, and consumer experience
  • Apply working knowledge of global toy safety regulations and standards (ASTM F963, CPSIA, EN71, ISO, etc.) and ensure requirements are clearly communicated to internal teams, suppliers, and test labs
  • Partner with internal labs and third-party testing facilities to execute product validation, review test plans and reports, and ensure compliance with regulatory and brand requirements
  • Utilize data from product testing, consumer complaints, returns, and field performance to identify trends, risks, and opportunities for product improvement
  • Conduct investigations into product failures, safety issues, and manufacturing defects using root cause analysis tools; document findings and support corrective actions
  • Support risk management activities (e.g., FMEA) to identify and mitigate product and process risks throughout development and production
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams (Design, Development, Packaging, Regulatory, Manufacturing) to ensure quality requirements are understood and effectively implemented
  • Identify downstream impacts of design or process decisions on safety, compliance, cost, and consumer experience, and communicate risks appropriately
  • Support supplier and manufacturing quality activities, including issue resolution, corrective actions, and quality performance monitoring
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives focused on enhancing product quality, testing strategies, and manufacturing processes while maintaining compliance
  • Support investigation and resolution of consumer complaints and field issues, ensuring timely and thorough responses
  • Periodic travel to global manufacturing sites and development partners as needed
Qualifications

What We’re Looking For:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Industrial, Materials, or Electrical Engineering (or related field)
  • 2–5 years of experience in quality engineering, product development, or manufacturing (toy or consumer products industry preferred)
  • Knowledge of global toy safety standards and regulations (ASTM F963, CPSIA, EN71, ISO, etc.)
  • Experience working with internal labs and/or third-party testing laboratories
  • Familiarity with manufacturing processes (e.g., plastics, textiles, electronics, packaging)
  • Experience with Quality Management Systems (QMS) and quality documentation
  • Knowledge of statistical analysis and data interpretation
  • Familiarity with risk management and root cause analysis tools (FMEA, 5 Whys, Fishbone, etc.)
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office; experience with statistical tools (e.g., Minitab) preferred
  • Strong collaboration skills with the ability to work effectively across design, engineering, labs, and manufacturing teams
  • Ability to interpret and apply global toy safety and consumer product regulations
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to make data-driven decisions
  • Ability to independently analyze, summarize, and present data clearly to support quality decisions
  • Strong attention to detail, especially related to product safety and compliance
  • Ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced product development environment
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Proactive mindset with the ability to identify risks and drive resolution
  • Team-oriented, adaptable, and comfortable working in a dynamic, cross-functional environment
