Job description

The Opportunity:
SME is seeking a Project Engineer / Senior Project Engineer to join our Steel, Coatings, and Nondestructive Testing (SCN) group to lead project management and provide technical support for fabrication quality assurance (QA) review services for steel and concrete structures. This role focuses on projects performed in fabrication shops on behalf of Michigan counties and cities, in accordance with MDOT requirements.
This position is ideal for an experienced civil engineering consultant who has experience with QA testing, is familiar with DOT standards and specifications, understands fabrication processes, is comfortable working directly with clients and fabricators, and can lead technical review work from proposal through final documentation.
Responsibilities:
  • Manage steel and concrete fabrication QA review projects for Local Agency clients in Michigan
  • Prepare scopes and quote fabrication review work based on MDOT standards and project requirements
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for counties, cities, fabricators, and internal SCN staff
  • Coordinate and schedule fabrication shop reviews for structural steel and concrete components
  • Work closely with inspection and testing staff to execute reviews in accordance with MDOT specifications and Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs)
  • Oversee review schedules, reporting, and final documentation packages
  • Review reports for quality, completeness, and compliance prior to submittal
  • Identify issues during fabrication and coordinate resolution with the team and client
  • Support business development, proposal generation, project setup, and invoice review
  • Become proficient with MDOT and project specific fabrication QA requirements applicable to Local Agencies
  • Provide technical consulting related to structural steel and prestressed concrete fabrication QA services
  • Mentoring, leading, and developing individual team members and project teams to be successful in their assigned responsibilities and career growth.
  • Occasionally assist with project management support for other SCN services

Requirements:
  • A four-year civil engineering degree with a Professional Engineering (PE) License in the state of Michigan is a prerequisite for this role. PE licensing in other states and/or Project Management Professional (PMP) certification preferred but not required.
  • Experience with fabrication review, special inspections, quality assurance, and/or other materials testing-related project management preferred, but not all required for the right candidate with a learning mindset
  • Ability to scope, price, and manage technical review work
  • Organized, detail oriented, and comfortable managing multiple active fabrication projects
  • Has competency using computer operating systems and MS Office Suite programs (Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint).
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills to effectively interact with clients, team members, and supervisors, conveying technical information clearly.
  • Has a general aptitude for identifying and resolving complex technical problems in the field or office, utilizing critical thinking and logical reasoning.
  • Demonstrates ethical conduct, maintaining confidentiality and ensuring safety and security in all aspects of work, strict adherence to safety protocols and guidelines, fostering a safe working environment for yourself and others
  • Technical expertise associated with DOT specifications and construction standards
  • Comfortable managing, tracking progress, and monitoring deliverables for several projects simultaneously
  • Comfortable working independently and as part of a team
