What are QA Testers?

QA Testers, or Quality Assurance Testers, are professionals responsible for evaluating software applications to ensure they meet specified requirements and function properly. They identify bugs, report issues, and verify that new features work as intended before software is released to users. QA Testers use manual and automated testing methods to check software performance, usability, and security. Their work is essential for delivering high-quality, reliable, and user-friendly software products.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a QA Tester, and why are they important?

To thrive as a QA Tester, you need a solid understanding of software development processes, attention to detail, and familiarity with test case design and execution, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Experience with automated testing tools (such as Selenium or JUnit), bug tracking systems (like Jira), and knowledge of scripting languages are typically required. Strong analytical thinking, effective communication, and problem-solving skills help QA Testers collaborate across teams and identify root causes of issues. These skills ensure software quality, reduce defects, and improve user satisfaction by enabling thorough and efficient testing processes.

What do you do as a QA tester?

A QA tester is responsible for evaluating software to identify bugs and ensure quality. They create and execute test cases, document issues, and work with developers to resolve problems, often using testing tools and scripts. Attention to detail and understanding of testing methodologies are essential for this role.

What are some common challenges QA Testers face when working on fast-paced development teams?

QA Testers often encounter challenges such as tight deadlines, rapidly changing requirements, and the need to quickly learn new tools or technologies. In fast-paced environments, balancing thorough test coverage with the speed of development can be difficult, and clear communication with developers and product managers is essential to address issues promptly. Adapting to evolving project priorities while maintaining quality standards is a key skill for success in this role.

What qualifications do I need to be a QA tester?

A QA tester typically needs a high school diploma or equivalent, with many roles preferring or requiring a bachelor's degree in computer science, information technology, or related fields. Relevant skills include knowledge of testing tools, understanding of software development life cycles, attention to detail, and basic programming or scripting abilities; certifications like ISTQB can also enhance job prospects.

What Is a QA Tester?

A QA (quality assurance) tester is someone who tests a product, usually before it is moved to production, to find defects or errors. The QA tester tries to use the product in typical and unusual ways to find any issues it may have. While this a general term used in most industries, the specific job duties vary significantly. For example, a technology QA tester examines software or websites for ease of use and relevant content. During the review, you record problems, known as bugs, and report them to the development team to be fixed. In the gaming industry, a game QA tester plays a video game with a critical mindset, assessing the functionality and overall experience.

Are QA testers still in demand?

QA testers remain in demand as companies prioritize software quality assurance to ensure reliable products. Skills in automation tools and scripting can enhance job prospects, especially in agile development environments. The role often requires attention to detail and familiarity with testing frameworks and tools like Selenium or JIRA.

Is QA a good entry level job?

A QA Tester role is often suitable for entry-level candidates, as it typically requires basic understanding of software development and testing processes. Skills in attention to detail, familiarity with testing tools, and the ability to follow procedures are important. Full-time

Re-posted 12 days ago

Job description

About the Company

SkySync is a rapidly evolving, fast-paced, venture-backed software innovator based in the Ann Arbor tech cluster with remote staff in all US time zones. Our workforce excels at data governance and managing our customer's data orchestration challenges like no other in our space and we have new product opportunities taking us toward a period of rapid growth.

We're committed to providing our customers with innovative, robust and secure solutions for managing their content across any platform. We need someone who has experience with digital platforms such as Microsoft SharePoint or Google Gsuite and can set up and execute complex tests for our feature-rich application. This is not a position for someone new to QA, as our staff handles complex testing, triaging reported issues, and is a full participant in our Agile workflow. We work remotely, so strong communication skills and self-motivation are a must.

Hiring in the following states:
Michigan, Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Massachusetts, Missouri, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Texas, Virginia, Washington

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Work with the test team to create and follow test plans, updating results in Confluence and JIRA
  • Plan test activity for specific User Stories, and coordinate with developers on testing specific items
  • Understand Agile testing principals and contribute to QA process improvement
  • Develop test plans, procedures and scripts (manual and automated) based on system and software requirements
  • Use Postman, Fiddler, JSON, basic SQL queries, and VM configurations to complete test activities across various platforms
  • Track and monitor all high and critical bugs in the backlog; communicate impact and advocate for when a bug should be resolved (severity/priority)
  • Execute all levels of testing (Install, Smoke, Feature, Integration, end-to-end and Regression)
  • Detect and track software defects and inconsistencies using Jira
  • Recreate and triage issues that have been escalated from level 1 support
  • Understand and apply security best practices in testing
  • Assist with documenting best practices, known issues, and FAQs for customers

Essential Skills/Qualifications

  • 5+ years QA experience, with a mix of manual and automated testing
  • 2+ years using JSON and tools like Postman
  • Familiarity with cloud providers, ECM platforms and network file systems
  • Problem analysis and problem solving
  • Understanding of QA process for software development in an Agile environment
  • Basic knowledge of Posgres/SQL, ReST interfaces, and test scripting/automation
  • Experience creating and testing on Virtual Machines
  • Have worked remotely and with remote teams
  • Strong communication skills

Bonus Points

  • Experience with C# programming and JAVA
  • Experience with GitHub and TeamCity

This position is a great fit for you if you like working in a company where quality is taken seriously; working with dedicated and very smart developers; if you like detailed work and are comfortable with exploratory and back-end testing, not just UI testing. You can handle the challenge of a complex product and testing that is heavily dependent on external platforms.

This position is not a great fit for you if you like large organization stability, extensive hierarchies or matrix organizations, and a relatively unchanging set of duties and responsibilities. You also prefer environments which have a low level of distraction with huge teams to help you. You only see one right way to solve a problem.
