What is a Python R job?

A Python R job typically involves working with both Python and R programming languages for data analysis, machine learning, and statistical computing. Professionals in this role use Python for automation, data engineering, and machine learning, while leveraging R for statistical modeling and data visualization. These roles are common in industries like finance, healthcare, and research, where data-driven decision-making is crucial. Candidates for this job should have expertise in both languages, along with skills in data manipulation, visualization, and algorithm development.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Python R position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Python R professional, you need a strong background in programming, data analysis, and statistical modeling, typically holding a degree in computer science, statistics, mathematics, or a related field. Proficiency in Python and R programming languages, alongside experience with data visualization tools (e.g., Matplotlib, ggplot2) and statistical packages, is essential; certifications like Data Science or Analytics credentials are often advantageous. Excellent problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and clear communication skills help in collaborating with teams and conveying complex results. These combined skills enable effective data-driven decision-making, efficient workflow, and impactful data solutions.

What are the typical responsibilities of a professional working with both Python and R programming languages?

Professionals leveraging both Python and R often handle a variety of data-centric tasks, including data cleaning, analysis, statistical modeling, and visualization to support business or research objectives. Daily responsibilities can range from developing machine learning models in Python, creating reproducible analyses in R, to integrating outputs for reporting and presentations. Collaboration with data engineers, domain experts, or business stakeholders is common, requiring effective communication to translate technical insights into actionable recommendations. Familiarity with both languages allows for flexibility in choosing the best tools for each project, making these roles both challenging and rewarding.

Job description

Company Description

Founded in 1989, SOSi is among the largest private, founder-owned technology and services integrators in the defense and government services industry. We deliver tailored solutions, tested leadership, and trusted results to enable national security missions worldwide.

Job Description

SOSi is seeking a Data Scientist Expert to support GEOINT mission requirements for US Army Intelligence and Security Command (INSCOM). The role involves applying advanced statistical, computational, and machine learning techniques to solve complex analytical problems and generate mission‑critical insights. This role requires deep proficiency in data science methodologies - including logistic regression, clustering, neural networks, deep learning, and natural language processing to develop, refine, and operationalize high‑value analytical models. The Data Scientist Expert integrates tabular, geospatial, and unstructured data sources; develops custom scripts and algorithms using languages such as Python, R, or Julia; and produces sophisticated analytical outputs that support operational, intelligence, and enterprise‑level decision‑making.

Essential Job Duties:

  • Perform predictive and prescriptive analytics to identify trends, patterns, and anomalies in large datasets; validate, document, and optimize all models for operational use.
  • Collect, clean, and fuse structured and unstructured data from multiple sources; design and maintain scalable data pipelines that ensure quality, lineage, and reliability at enterprise scale.
  • Apply logistic regression, clustering, PCA, NLP, neural networks, deep learning, and related techniques to deliver insights otherwise unobtainable and to meet mission objectives.
  • Develop and maintain algorithms, scripts, and micro‑services (Python, R, Julia, SQL) to automate data ingestion, processing, geoprocessing, and analytics workflows.
  • Design and deploy models for object detection, image classification, feature extraction, and activity recognition using modern ML frameworks; implement testing, performance tuning, and MLOps practices.
  • Build actionable dashboards and visualizations; deliver clear reports, charts, and multimedia presentations that translate technical findings into mission‑relevant decisions.
  • Employ geospatial scientific principles and GIS tools to integrate location‑based data and models; support GEOINT workflows and (where applicable) NSG TCPED processes.
  • Administer, query, and optimize tabular and geospatial datasets; leverage SQL and spatial databases while enforcing metadata standards, governance policies, and data stewardship.
  • Operate within TS/SCI/SSBI requirements; implement security, privacy, and access controls across data, models, and tooling to meet DoD/IC policies and program standards.
  • Work within Scrum/Kanban/Lean frameworks; partner with stakeholders to define requirements, iterate solutions, and evaluate emerging tools/algorithms—recommending innovations that improve analytical outcomes and mission impact.
Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • MA or MS from an accredited institution of higher learning in a STEM-related discipline AND 5 years of relevant experience; OR
    • BA/BS degree in a STEM-related discipline AND 10 years of relevant experience
  • Demonstrated mastery and employment of geographic and geospatial scientific principles, tools, and analytical techniques, to be reflected throughout most of the relevant prior experience.
  • Demonstrated experience and proficiency with data science techniques including (but not limited to) logistic regression, vector, natural language processing, principal component analysis, clustering techniques, neural networks, deep learning models, image recognition and algorithm employment or development in support of any of the foregoing.
  • Demonstrated experience and proficiency with tabular analysis, SQL, and scripting languages (e.g., Python, R, Julia, etc.) to deliver unique insights otherwise unobtainable.
  • Familiarity with agile software development project management frameworks (e.g., Scrum, Kanban, Lean, etc.) to deliver new capabilities.
  • Demonstrated experience and proficiency with tabular analysis, SQL, and scripting languages (e.g., Python, R, Julia, etc.) to deliver unique insights otherwise unobtainable.
  • Current, active TS/SCI security clearance with Single Scope Background Investigation (SSBI)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with IT, business, or operational metrics platforms (e.g., Splunk, Elastic, Confluence, etc.)
  • Certification in AWS (AI/ML specialty).
  • Knowledge of the National System for Geospatial-Intelligence (NSG) tasking, collection, processing, exploitation and dissemination (TCPED) production chain.
  • Experience working within a DoD or Intelligence Community (IC) operational environment and with DoD/IC geospatial data repositories.
  • Familiarity with Army, DoD or IC GEOINT or Geospatial processes, policy and programs.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office tools to deliver reports, graphics and briefings.
