Data Visualization / Analytics Lead

Position Overview

The Data Visualization / Analytics Lead designs, develops, tests, deploys, maintains, and improves dashboards, user interfaces, reports, and interactive visualization products for NCHS programs. This position supports data dissemination, public health analytics, stakeholder presentations, accessibility compliance, visualization quality control, and operational support using approved tools such as Tableau, Power BI, R, Python, R Shiny, D3, and related visualization libraries or platforms.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the design, development, testing, deployment, enhancement, and maintenance of dashboards, interactive reports, user interfaces, visual analytics, and data dissemination products.
  • Use approved visualization tools and languages, including Tableau, Power BI, R, Python, R Shiny, D3, and other approved platforms based on program-specific business needs.
  • Gather, preprocess, normalize, clean, validate, and prepare data for visualization, reporting, analytics, and public-facing interpretation.
  • Design custom calculations, filters, drill-downs, interactive features, and visualization structures that improve readability, usability, and accurate interpretation.
  • Select appropriate visualization types based on data characteristics, stakeholder objectives, audience needs, and dissemination requirements.
  • Develop visual analytics for survey data, registration systems, NCHS data assets, and other program-specific datasets.
  • Test and validate visualizations to ensure accuracy, usability, accessibility, browser/device compatibility, and alignment with defined requirements.
  • Optimize visualization performance, data refresh processes, code, queries, and analytics workloads for large datasets and operational use.
  • Maintain quality control and compliance with data dissemination, visualization, security, privacy, and Section 508 governance requirements.
  • Run reports on web interfaces, troubleshoot issues, correct problems, and support ongoing operation and maintenance of visualization products.
  • Provide presentations, demonstrations, training, release notifications, user support, and stakeholder communications for visualization products.
  • Prepare program documentation, code comments, output descriptions, accuracy assessments, technical documentation, and project closeout materials.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Demonstrated experience developing dashboards, data visualizations, reports, analytical products, web-based interfaces, or data dissemination tools.
  • Experience using Tableau, Power BI, R, Python, R Shiny, D3, visualization libraries, or comparable approved visualization platforms.
  • Experience working with survey data, public health data, statistical data, registration systems, large datasets, or multi-source analytical data is preferred.
  • Experience with data cleaning, preprocessing, normalization, validation, custom calculations, filters, interactivity, and performance optimization.
  • Experience supporting Section 508/accessibility, usability, data quality, security governance, and stakeholder review requirements.
  • Experience preparing technical documentation, user demonstrations, training materials, and code documentation for Government or regulated environments is preferred.
