What are pumps in the context of jobs?

In the context of jobs, 'pumps' typically refers to professionals who install, maintain, and repair various types of pumps used for moving liquids or gases. These workers may be called pump technicians, pump operators, or pump mechanics, and they are essential in industries such as water treatment, oil and gas, manufacturing, and construction. Their responsibilities include troubleshooting pump issues, performing routine inspections, and ensuring pumps operate efficiently and safely. They may also handle the installation of new pumping systems and provide recommendations for upgrades or replacements. Specialized knowledge of different pump types, such as centrifugal or positive displacement pumps, is often required.

What are some common challenges faced by pump operators and technicians in maintaining equipment reliability?

Pump operators and technicians often encounter challenges such as dealing with unexpected breakdowns, managing wear and tear on components, and ensuring proper alignment and lubrication. Regular preventive maintenance is crucial, but diagnosing issues quickly under tight deadlines can be stressful. Collaboration with maintenance teams and engineers is essential for troubleshooting, and staying updated on the latest technologies helps in minimizing downtime and extending equipment life.

What is the difference between Pumps vs Pump Operators?

Understanding the distinction helps in targeting the right job roles or resources for career development.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Pump Technician, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Pump Technician, you need strong mechanical aptitude, troubleshooting skills, and typically a high school diploma or technical certification in a related field. Familiarity with tools such as vibration analyzers, pump alignment systems, and knowledge of various pump types is crucial. Attention to detail, problem-solving, and effective communication help technicians excel in diagnosing issues and working with teams or clients. These skills ensure reliable pump operation, minimize downtime, and maintain safety in industrial environments.

Job description

Job Type
Full-time
Description
The Role
This role focuses on the repair, rebuild, and field service of industrial pumps and rotating equipment. You'll work on a wide variety of equipment, supporting customers across manufacturing, chemical, food & beverage, and other industrial markets.
Most work is performed in our OEM-authorized service center, where you'll tear down, inspect, repair, rebuild, and test customer equipment. Field work includes troubleshooting, alignments, equipment removal, installation support, and startup activities at customer facilities.
This is an OEM-authorized repair environment, not plant maintenance. Rather than performing routine maintenance on the same equipment every day, you'll be involved in complete tear-downs, failure analysis, rebuilds, and remanufacturing work that restores a wide range of equipment to OEM standards.
About Fischer & Tencarva
Fischer Process Industries is a distributor and service provider of pumps, valves, instrumentation, controls, and process equipment, with locations throughout Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana, and West Virginia.
Fischer is part of Tencarva Machinery Company , one of the largest and most respected distributors and OEM-authorized service networks in the pump and process equipment industry - 38 locations across 17 states. Together, Fischer and Tencarva support industrial customers through equipment distribution, applications engineering, OEM-authorized repair, field service, automation and controls, and custom fabrication. Our customers rely on us for everything from routine maintenance and equipment repairs to facility expansions, capital projects, system upgrades, and new process installations.
You will regularly work on:
  • Self-priming centrifugal pumps
  • Mag drive pumps
  • Vertical turbine pumps
  • Air-operated diaphragm pumps

*Gorman-Rupp is primary pump line
*Occasional work on other types of pumps and rotating process equipment, including gearboxes, blowers, motors, valves, mixers/agitators, etc.
What You'll Be Responsible For
  • Disassemble, inspect, troubleshoot, and diagnose failures in industrial pumps and rotating equipment
  • Perform complete tear-downs, repairs, rebuilds, and remanufacturing work to OEM standards
  • Replace bearings, seals, shafts, impellers, wear components, and other repair parts
  • Perform laser alignment and other precision mechanical measurements
  • Read and interpret mechanical drawings, parts diagrams, manuals, and OEM documentation
  • Test, inspect, and verify equipment performance following repair completion
  • Assist with field troubleshooting, equipment removal, installation, alignment, and startup activities
  • Support repair work on motors, gearboxes, blowers, and other rotating equipment as needed
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safety-focused shop environment
  • Coordinate with service leadership on repair priorities, parts requirements, and job status

Please note : This is a hands-on industrial pump repair and rebuild role within an OEM-authorized service center - not a general maintenance technician position.
Why Join Fischer / Tencarva
  • Day shift, Monday-Friday schedule; occasional evenings or weekends only for customer emergencies.
  • Long-term company stability - Tencarva (founded in 1978) has never had a layoff and does not manage downturns by cutting people
  • Stable, steady workload - not seasonal or project-based
  • Family-oriented culture that understands/respects life outside of work. Flexible schedule if family needs arise.
  • Primarily shop-based work
  • Big-company resources with a small shop feel

We take pride in doing quality work and standing behind our repairs/remans. While we move with urgency for our customers, we do not run a high-pressure production shop or sacrifice quality for speed. Our expectations of our mechanics are high, but realistic and sustainable.
Benefits Include:
  • Paid Time Off, including 10 holidays
  • Health Insurance, including medical, dental, vision, disability, and life
  • 401(k) with Profit Sharing
  • Employee Assistance Program

Requirements
Qualifications:
  • 2+ years of hands-on industrial pump repair, rebuild, rotating equipment service, industrial maintenance, millwright, or related mechanical experience required (5+ years preferred)
  • Experience with centrifugal pumps, vertical turbine pumps, and other rotating equipment strongly preferred
  • Ability to independently manage tear-down and rebuild projects from inspection through final testing
  • Familiarity with laser alignment and precision mechanical measurements
  • Capable of reading and understanding parts diagrams, mechanical drawings, and repair documentation
  • Comfortable performing occasional field service work at customer facilities
  • Valid driver's license

Relevant Experience / Backgrounds
We are particularly interested in candidates with experience in:
  • Industrial pump repair and rebuild
  • Rotating equipment repair
  • Millwright work
  • Industrial maintenance
  • Motor repair
  • Gearbox and blower repair
  • Field service and equipment installation
  • OEM-authorized repair centers
  • Industrial service and repair shops

*Please note: This is a hands-on industrial repair and rebuild role within an OEM-authorized service center - not a general maintenance technician position. Candidates coming from pump distributors, industrial service centers, rotating equipment shops, or millwright environments with hands-on pump rebuild experience are encouraged to apply.
Key Skills: Industrial pump repair, pump rebuild, rotating equipment, centrifugal pumps, vertical turbine pumps, AODD pumps, mechanical seals, bearings, shafts, laser alignment, OEM-authorized service.
The duties, responsibilities, and activities described above are not exhaustive and may be subject to change. Additionally, please note that the job title for this posting is designed to be descriptive and may not reflect the official title used internally for job classification purposes.
