Job description

SUMMARY: The purpose of this position is to assist the public with library transactions and to maintain the library collection. This is a substitute position to fill in when a regularly scheduled library assistant in not available. Substitutes may be asked to assist during any library open hours, including Tuesday and Thursday evenings and Saturdays as needed. Sometimes there is advance notice that a substitute will be needed, and the substitute can be scheduled in advance. Sometimes there is an unexpected absence and a substitute may be asked to come in if available. Hours will vary from zero to twenty-one hours per week.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Perform routine circulation functions such as checking library materials in and out, collecting fines, registering patrons, filling reserves, completing clerical tasks and shelving books.
  • Provide ready and directional reference service to patrons in person and by telephone.
  • Assist patrons in using the on-line catalog and finding materials.
  • Assist librarians in preparing for and conducting library programs.
  • Other tasks as assigned.

SUPERVISORY/BUDGET RESPONSIBILITIES:

This position has no supervisory or budget responsibility. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Library Director, Circulation Supervisor and regular staff.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Good customer service skills.
  • Strong written and spoken communication skills.
  • Accurate data entry and cash handling, even in times of high transaction volume.
  • Maintain a welcoming demeanor with patrons, volunteers and staff.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School diploma or equivalent, one (1) year of post-secondary education preferred.
  • Library experience preferred.
  • Must be physically able to shelve books.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to speak and write in Spanish as well as English preferred.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Position is located in an office environment with little or no exposure to environmental conditions. Health and safety hazards are minimal. No protective equipment is required. Fine dexterity, handling and vision are constantly required. Frequently, walking, lifting, sitting, pushing/pulling, bending, hearing and talking are required.

  • Must successfully complete a background investigation.
