About the Position:

SMU Libraries seeks an Evening and Weekend Circulation Specialist for the Duda Family Business Library as part of a dynamic team that supports the academic experience of students and faculty within the Cox School of Business and the expanded SMU community. Reporting directly to the Director of the Business Library, the Evening and Weekend Circulation Specialist plays a vital role in promoting the combined missions of SMU Libraries, SMU Cox School of Business, and SMU.

This position requires supervisory and customer-service work experience. The Evening and Weekend Circulation Specialist will perform tasks related to the efficient functioning of the Duda Family Business Library, Ida Family Reading Room, and Kitt Investing and Trading Center. Overseeing facility operations and physical spaces; ensuring patrons are properly assisted; training and supervising student workers; and closing the facility in the evenings and on Sundays is required. Overall, the Evening and Weekend Specialist is the primary staff member responsible for ensuring consistent, high-quality library services during evening and weekend hours.

Essential Functions:

  • Train, supervise, and mentor student workers, ensuring nightly closing procedures

  • Provide input towards student assistant hiring decisions and staffing matrices

  • Handle circulation equipment management in library's system, Alma, by auditing inventory nightly, approving extensions for special class circumstances at close, and communicating with staff about circulation irregularities

  • Follow and enforce library circulation policies and procedures, in conjunction with the SMU Libraries Access Services Team

  • Provide high quality customer service to all patrons, including staffing the main desk when needed

  • Monitor facility operations and physical spaces of all library interior/exterior areas to ensure safety and emergency response readiness for the facility

  • Maintain orderliness and cleanliness of library spaces, including the outer Ida Family Reading Room and Kitt Investing and Trading Center, including Kitt Center preparations for events and classes

  • Oversee course reserves in library's system, Leganto, and assist with maintaining physical journal collections

  • Serve on the SMU Libraries Collections Team and assist in reviewing books and journals to acquire and weed outdated materials

  • Process requests for extended library access as needed for business graduate students and process alumni card requests

  • Administer workshop management for the Duda Family Business Library and audit participant attendance to ensure academic integrity records

  • Review business research guides and suggest edits to ensure recommended resources meet evolving curriculum needs

Education and Experience:

Required Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or equivalent

  • 3 years of work experience

  • Minimum of 1 year of supervisory experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in a business-related field

  • 3 years of work and supervisory experience in an in-person public service role

  • Library work experience

  • Demonstrated ability to provide basic technology troubleshooting

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Candidate must demonstrate strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate broadly across the University and develop and maintain effective relationships with a wide range of constituencies. Must also demonstrate strong written communication skills.

Candidate must possess strong problem-solving skills with the ability to identify and analyze problems, as well as devise solutions. Must also have strong organizational, planning and time management skills.
