What are some common challenges Prototype Engineers face when transitioning designs from concept to functional prototypes?

Prototype Engineers often encounter challenges such as interpreting incomplete or evolving design specifications, sourcing unconventional materials, and working within tight deadlines. Close collaboration with design, engineering, and manufacturing teams is essential to resolve technical issues quickly and ensure the prototype aligns with the intended functionality. Flexibility and creative problem-solving are key, as unexpected obstacles frequently arise during the rapid iteration and testing phases.

What is a Prototype Engineer?

A Prototype Engineer is a professional who designs, builds, and tests early versions of products or components to evaluate their functionality and performance before mass production. They collaborate with designers, engineers, and product managers to turn concepts into tangible prototypes, using a variety of fabrication techniques and materials. Their work helps identify potential design improvements, troubleshoot issues, and ensure that the final product meets technical and user requirements.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Prototype Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Prototype Engineer, you need strong skills in mechanical or electrical engineering, rapid prototyping techniques, and a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with CAD software, 3D printing technologies, and hands-on fabrication tools is typically required, along with knowledge of prototyping standards. Creativity, problem-solving, and effective communication are essential soft skills to excel in cross-functional teams and adapt to evolving project requirements. These abilities enable successful design iteration, effective collaboration, and efficient transition from concept to functional prototype.

What Does a Prototype Engineer Do?

A prototype engineer is part of a product development team that designs prototypes for new kinds of industrial products. Many companies employ design engineers to perform numerous technical duties, such as drawing up schematics and blueprints, overseeing the production of prototypes, and testing those prototypes to decide whether they should enter mass production. The career requires significant educational qualifications and a variety of skills and experience. You should have an engineering degree in the field you wish to enter, strong analytical problem-solving, and the ability to work as part of a large team.

Job description

Welcome to the Traegerhood:

Our business is BBQ, and business tastes good. Traeger invented the wood pellet grill over 30 years ago, and we're fanatics who are dedicated to bringing people together to create a more flavorful world. From our headquarters in Salt Lake City, we work tirelessly to provide a world-class experience to our customers, retailers, and especially our employees. If you're a team player who's dedicated to delivering top-quality results every day, then we want you to come cook with us.

What You'll Do:

As an Electrical Engineer II at Traeger, you will support both sustaining and new product development projects across our grill portfolio. You will triage field returns, provide escalation support to customer service, perform root cause and corrective action analysis, contribute to circuit design and analysis, and help maintain the lab and our reliability test fixtures. You will grow your schematic capture and PCB layout skills in OrCAD X while collaborating with a team of experienced engineers. Travel to Asia is expected as needed to support supplier visits and new product introduction.

How You'll Help Us Win:

  • Triage field returns and perform root cause analysis, working with quality, customer service, and manufacturing to identify trends and drive corrective action.

  • Provide engineering escalation support to customer service on complex field issues beyond front line troubleshooting.

  • Develop written troubleshooting guides and technical articles that enable customer service agents to resolve electrical issues consistently.

  • Attend customer service sync meetings to share findings, review field trends, and align on escalated cases.

  • Support sustaining engineering on existing products, including component changes, supplier transitions, and design improvements.

  • Contribute to new product development from concept through production, collaborating across mechanical, firmware, and industrial design.

  • Design, modify, and analyze electrical hardware including analog and digital circuits, wiring harnesses, and test fixtures.

  • Use OrCAD X for schematic capture and PCB layout, and contribute to library maintenance.

  • Build, debug, and bring up prototype hardware at the bench using oscilloscopes and standard lab equipment.

  • Solder and rework circuit board assemblies and wiring harnesses for prototype builds, field analysis, and engineering changes.

  • Support reliability test fixture development and maintenance.

  • Maintain the electrical lab, including organization, equipment, and consumables.

  • Participate in 8D problem solving and corrective action activities; training available for engineers new to the methodology.

  • Work with external PCB layout suppliers and component vendors to deliver prototypes on time and on budget.

  • Support DFA and DFM activities and contribute to production test process development.

Bonus Points if you have this:

  • Experience with OrCAD X or other professional ECAD tools for schematic capture and PCB layout.
  • Experience with 8D problem solving and formal root cause and corrective action methodologies.
  • Experience with IoT connected products, including Wi-Fi and Bluetooth communications.
  • Familiarity with EMI and EMC compliance testing for consumer electronics.
  • Experience with reliability testing, test fixture design, or production test development.
  • Experience developing products using a stage gate process.
  • Experience leveraging AI for improved efficiency.
  • Prior experience in consumer electronics or outdoor cooking products.

What You'll Need To Succeed:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • 2 to 4 years of experience in electrical hardware engineering or a related field.
  • Working knowledge of analog and digital circuit design fundamentals and circuit analysis.
  • Understanding of microcontroller architecture and peripheral interfaces such as UART, SPI, I2C, and CAN.
  • Hands on experience with bench level debugging and hardware bring up using oscilloscopes and standard lab equipment.
  • Soldering skills sufficient to rework circuit boards and wiring harnesses.
  • Basic understanding of PCB layout principles and best practices.
  • Disciplined, data driven approach to problem solving.
  • Ability to translate complex technical content into clear written troubleshooting instructions for a customer service audience.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and experience using JIRA or similar work tracking tools.
