Job Overview

Moon Fabricating Corp is hiring an experienced Lead Fitter Welder to join our fabrication team in Kokomo, IN. We are looking for a skilled, hands-on fabricator who can fit and weld custom steel components, accurately read blueprints, and help lead the daily work of other shop team members.

This is a working lead position, not a desk job. You will be expected to work alongside the crew performing fitting, welding, layout, cutting, grinding, and fabrication while helping ensure projects are completed safely, accurately, and on schedule.

What You'll Do

• Fit, assemble, and weld custom steel and plate metal components according to project specifications.
• Read and interpret blueprints, shop drawings, measurements, and fabrication details.
• Perform layout, fitting, tack welding, welding, cutting, and grinding as needed.
• Lead by example while working hands-on alongside other welders and fabricators.
• Help assign and coordinate daily shop tasks based on production priorities.
• Check fit-up, measurements, weld quality, and completed work for accuracy.
• Ensure fabricated components meet drawings, specifications, and company quality standards.
• Train and mentor less-experienced fitters, welders, and fabrication team members.
• Identify fabrication problems and make necessary adjustments to keep work moving.
• Track daily production and labor hours as required.
• Help maintain an organized, efficient, and safe fabrication shop.
• Communicate material, equipment, quality, or scheduling issues to management.
• Follow and reinforce all company safety procedures.

Required Qualifications

• 5+ years of fitting, welding, and custom steel fabrication experience.
• Strong experience with custom plate metal or industrial steel fabrication.
• Ability to independently read and work from blueprints and fabrication drawings.
• Strong fitting, layout, welding, cutting, and grinding skills.
• Ability to accurately measure, lay out, fit, and assemble fabricated components.
• Previous experience leading, training, or directing other welders or fabricators.
• Strong understanding of weld quality, proper fit-up, and fabrication tolerances.
• Ability to troubleshoot fabrication and fit-up issues.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality craftsmanship.
• Ability to work safely in an industrial fabrication environment.
• High School Diploma or GED.

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous experience as a Lead Fitter Welder, Lead Fabricator, Fabrication Leadman, or Shop Lead.
• Experience working with heavy plate steel and custom-fabricated assemblies.
• Experience in industrial or manufacturing fabrication environments.
• Knowledge of corrosion-resistant lining or related industrial services.
• Experience helping improve shop workflow and production efficiency.
