Project Manager Robotics information

What does a Project Manager in Robotics do?

A Project Manager in Robotics oversees the planning, execution, and completion of robotics projects. They coordinate teams of engineers, designers, and other specialists to ensure that projects meet technical requirements, stay within budget, and are delivered on schedule. They also manage risk, communicate with stakeholders, and ensure compliance with relevant industry standards. Their role is crucial in bridging the gap between technical development and business objectives, ensuring that robotics solutions are successfully implemented.

How does a Project Manager in Robotics typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during a project lifecycle?

As a Project Manager in Robotics, you will regularly coordinate with engineers, software developers, procurement specialists, and quality assurance teams to ensure the seamless integration of hardware and software components. Effective communication and regular status meetings are crucial for aligning project milestones and addressing any technical or scheduling challenges early on. Additionally, you may interact with clients or end-users to gather requirements and provide updates, making strong interpersonal skills and a collaborative mindset essential for success in this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Project Manager in Robotics, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Project Manager in Robotics, you need a strong background in engineering or computer science, experience in project management, and familiarity with robotics systems. Proficiency with project management tools (such as Jira, Asana, or MS Project), understanding of robotics software/hardware, and certifications like PMP or Agile are typically required. Exceptional leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills help you manage cross-functional teams and adapt to evolving project needs. These skills and qualifications ensure projects are delivered efficiently, meet technical standards, and foster innovation in a complex, fast-paced robotics environment.

What is the difference between Project Manager Robotics vs Robotics Engineer?

AspectProject Manager RoboticsRobotics Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Engineering, Project Management CertificationBachelor's or Master's in Robotics, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering
Work EnvironmentOversees projects, coordinates teams, manages timelinesDesigns, develops, tests robotic systems
Employer & Industry UsageManufacturing, automation, tech companiesResearch labs, industrial automation, startups

While both roles work within the robotics industry, a Project Manager Robotics focuses on overseeing projects, managing teams, and ensuring timely delivery. In contrast, a Robotics Engineer is involved in designing and developing robotic systems. The roles often collaborate but require different skill sets and responsibilities.

Job description

Description
You in the Role and on the Team: As a Senior Software Engineer at Prime Robotics, you'll own meaningful pieces of our next-generation robotic control systems end-to-end - from design through production. We're looking for an engineer who takes ownership of difficult problems, drives them through to completion without close supervision, and has the technical depth to unblock work others cannot. You'll use your expertise in Java, Spring Boot, and distributed system design to build scalable APIs, resolve longstanding technical challenges, and raise the technical bar of the team around you.
Employee Value Proposition (EVP): This is not just another developer role; it's an opportunity to significantly impact the future of robotics technology. You'll work on challenging projects that merge software with physical hardware, creating innovative solutions that redefine automation in the logistics and manufacturing industries. At Prime Robotics, you'll grow professionally while contributing to groundbreaking advancements in the field.
A Day in the Life
Own Work End-to-End: You take problems from ambiguous to delivered, operating independently once direction is set. When work stalls or sits between teams, you take responsibility for moving it forward. You communicate status, risks, and tradeoffs proactively, so leadership has clear visibility into progress at all times.
Solve the Hard Problems: Within your first 90 days, take on the team's most difficult open technical problems - the ones requiring significant depth and persistence to resolve. You diagnose root causes rather than symptoms, design durable fixes, and document them so the team can avoid recurring issues. You also act as second-level support for customer escalations where engineering depth is required.
Develop Robust, Scalable APIs: Lead the design and implementation of scalable and efficient APIs to support Prime Robotics' next-generation control system for robotic operations. Within the first 60 days, assess current API architecture and propose enhancements to increase system responsiveness and reliability by 20%. Deliver high-quality code that meets stringent performance benchmarks and security standards.
Optimize Robotic System Performance: Over the next 6 months, lead efforts to assess and implement software optimizations that enhance the performance of robotic systems. Develop algorithms that improve processing speed and reduce error rates by 15%. Document the process improvements and present findings to the team during monthly innovation meetings.
Collaborate and Lead Cross-Functional Teams: Engage with cross-functional teams including hardware engineers, system architects, and product managers to ensure the seamless integration of software components. Regularly participate in late-night meetings with international colleagues to synchronize project efforts and maintain momentum. Track project milestones and report on the status to senior management bi-weekly.
Mentor and Raise the Bar: By the end of the first quarter, establish a mentorship cadence for junior developers focused on ownership habits, system design, and engineering rigor - not just syntax. Conduct code reviews that push for clarity, correctness, and long-term maintainability.
Stay at the Forefront of Technology: Provide strategic guidance and thought leadership on emerging trends in robotics software and industry best practices. Within the first year, identify and advocate for the adoption of at least two new technologies that can enhance our software stack, positioning Prime Robotics as an industry leader in automation solutions.
Requirements
  • 5+ years of software engineering experience, preferably 7+ years
  • Deep expertise in Java, Spring Boot, and system design - able to design, debug, and operate scalable APIs in production
  • A track record of owning projects end-to-end - examples where you took something ambiguous, drove it through delivery, and were accountable for the outcome (not just the code)
  • Demonstrated ability to unblock yourself and others on difficult technical problems - comfortable making progress under ambiguity and incomplete requirements
  • Strong written communication - you proactively surface status, risks, and decisions to stakeholders
  • Experience mentoring more junior developers
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or similar preferred
  • Experience in the robotics or similar field preferred
  • 25% travel required

Please note that this role will be based on-site, full-time at our HQ in Lakewood, CO.
The minimum expected base salary for this role is $140,000, annually informed by external market data. Actual offers will depend on factors such as the candidate's experience, education, training, key or critical skills, and current market and business conditions.
Our hiring process may incorporate AI-assisted tools to support activities such as application review, resume screening, and response evaluation. These tools are used to assist our recruitment team and do not make hiring decisions independently. All final decisions are made by a human reviewer. For questions about how your personal data is handled during this process, please don't hesitate to reach out to us.

Benefits
  • Employer-subsidized medical, dental, and vision insurance plans to support your health and wellbeing.
  • Dedicated vacation and sick leave that allows you to recharge and take care of yourself when needed.
  • Invaluable hands-on experience with cutting-edge robotics technology that keeps your skills at the industry forefront.
  • A collaborative culture where innovation thrives and your work has a real impact.
  • The excitement of contributing to transformative technology in a fast-growing industry.
