Project Manager Direct Hire information

What is a project manager direct hire?

A Project Manager Direct Hire is a professional who is recruited and employed directly by a company to oversee and manage specific projects. Unlike contract or temporary project managers, direct hires are permanent employees who are responsible for planning, executing, and closing projects while managing teams, budgets, and timelines. This role often involves coordinating between various departments, stakeholders, and external vendors to ensure project goals are met efficiently. Being a direct hire typically offers more stability and benefits compared to contract positions.

How does a project manager direct hire typically collaborate with cross-functional teams?

As a direct hire Project Manager, you'll regularly coordinate with cross-functional teams such as engineering, marketing, finance, and operations. This involves leading meetings to align on project goals, negotiating deadlines, and facilitating communication to ensure everyone stays informed and on track. You may face challenges in balancing competing priorities and resolving conflicts, but strong interpersonal and organizational skills help foster collaboration. Establishing clear roles, responsibilities, and expectations early in the project is key to successful teamwork.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a project manager direct hire, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Project Manager (Direct Hire), you need strong organizational, leadership, and problem-solving skills, typically supported by a bachelor’s degree in business, management, or a related field. Familiarity with project management software (such as MS Project, Asana, or Jira) and certifications like PMP or PRINCE2 are often required. Exceptional communication, adaptability, and stakeholder management abilities help you navigate complex team dynamics and shifting project priorities. These skills ensure successful project delivery, client satisfaction, and efficient use of resources in fast-paced environments.

What is the difference between Project Manager Direct Hire vs Project Coordinator?

AspectProject Manager Direct HireProject Coordinator
CredentialsBachelor's degree, PMP certification often preferredAssociate's or Bachelor's degree, relevant certifications optional
Work EnvironmentLeads projects, manages teams, responsible for project successSupports project tasks, assists project managers, coordinates activities
Employer UsageUsed across industries for managing complex projectsCommonly supports project teams in various industries

The main difference is that a Project Manager Direct Hire is responsible for leading and managing entire projects, while a Project Coordinator supports project activities and assists the project manager. The Project Manager typically has more experience, certifications, and accountability for project outcomes.

Can I get a remote job as a project manager?

Yes, many project manager roles are available as remote positions, especially in industries like IT, marketing, and consulting. Remote project managers need strong communication skills, proficiency with project management tools, and often require relevant certifications such as PMP or Scrum Master. Availability of remote work depends on the employer and project requirements.

Is it possible to get a project manager job without previous direct experience?

While previous direct experience is often preferred for project manager roles, candidates with strong transferable skills such as leadership, communication, and organization, along with relevant certifications like PMP or CAPM, can sometimes qualify for entry-level or assistant project manager positions. Gaining experience through related roles or certifications can improve chances of securing a project management job without direct prior experience.

CMC Development & Construction

Dallas, TX • On-site

Full-time

Job description

We are looking for a Senior Project Manager who leads with excellence, operates with the highest standards of integrity, and thrives in a high-performance, people-first culture. If you are a proven construction leader who is ready to take ownership of complex, high-value projects and grow alongside an ambitious organization — we want to hear from you.

Overview:

The Senior Project Manager is CMC's senior-most project delivery leader, responsible for the full lifecycle management of complex commercial construction projects from initiation and planning through execution, closeout, and owner turnover. This role holds total accountability for safety performance, contract compliance, budget integrity, schedule adherence, quality outcomes, and client satisfaction across all assigned projects.

The Senior PM leads, develops, and aligns a multidisciplinary construction management team — including direct hire personnel, area construction managers, superintendents, and subcontractors — instilling a culture of craft excellence, proactive planning, and zero-injury safety philosophy on every project they touch.

Responsibilities:

Safety Leadership & Zero-Injury Culture

  • Model and champion CMC's zero-injury safety philosophy through daily personal engagement with the project team and workforce
  • Establish and enforce a culture where every accident is viewed as preventable and every team member is empowered to stop unsafe work
  • Ensure full project compliance with OSHA regulations, CMC safety policies, and site-specific safety programs
  • Hold subcontractors and direct hire personnel to the same uncompromising safety standard without exception
  • Lead incident investigations when required and drive implementation of corrective actions and lessons learned

Project Planning & Execution Leadership

  • Lead comprehensive project planning from initiation through completion — including daily, weekly, and overall project-level scheduling strategy
  • Drive implementation of CII (Construction Industry Institute) best practices in planning, productivity, and craft execution across all project phases
  • Lead and champion craft planning processes that deliver high craft productivity, workforce efficiency, and overall cost management
  • Establish and maintain project baseline schedules; proactively identify and resolve schedule risks before they become delays
  • Oversee project setup activities including subcontracting strategy development, shop drawing review and processing, and early procurement planning
  • Serve as proposal manager for medium-sized construction projects — developing construction execution plans, strategies, and cost proposals

Team Leadership & Talent Development

  • Lead, supervise, and develop a high-performing construction management and technical staff team typical of large-scale, complex projects
  • Manage multiple Area Construction Manager direct reports on projects in excess of $500M, ensuring alignment across all project areas
  • Drive an effective on-site craft supervisor training, mentoring, and leadership development program that builds CMC's internal talent pipeline
  • Align the entire project team — from field supervision through executive reporting — around shared safety, quality, cost, and schedule goals
  • Coach and develop Project Managers and Assistant PMs to build CMC's next generation of project leaders

Contract, Budget & Change Management

  • Ensure full contracts compliance and rigorous financial management within the allocated project budget
  • Manage contract changes timely and effectively — from identification through negotiation, documentation, and resolution
  • Maintain detailed cost tracking, forecast-to-complete analysis, and variance reporting to CMC leadership and ownership
  • Develop and manage subcontract scopes, terms, and performance expectations to protect CMC's financial and legal position
  • Proactively identify and communicate commercial risks, opportunities, and exposures to the executive team

Client & Stakeholder Management

  • Serve as CMC's senior point of contact for clients, owners, engineers, and key project stakeholders throughout the project lifecycle
  • Build and sustain trusted, long-term client relationships founded on transparency, responsiveness, and exceptional delivery
  • Facilitate alignment between internal teams and external organizations including engineering firms, design partners, and client representatives
  • Represent CMC with professionalism, authority, and integrity in all owner, agency, and public-facing project interactions

Quality Assurance & Compliance

  • Establish and enforce CMC's quality standards across all project phases, scopes, and subcontract packages
  • Oversee shop drawing review, submittal processing, and RFI management to ensure full compliance with the approved document set
  • Drive accountability for corrective action when quality deficiencies are identified — at the subcontractor, supervisor, and staff level

Qualifications:

Required

  • Minimum 10 years of progressive construction management experience with demonstrated growth into senior project leadership
  • Proven track record managing large-scale, complex commercial construction projects — experience with projects exceeding $50M strongly preferred
  • Deep personal commitment to safety as a core leadership value — not a compliance activity — with a genuine belief that all accidents are preventable
  • Comprehensive understanding of CII best practices and their practical application in field and management environments
  • Strong working knowledge of planning and scheduling processes including CPM scheduling, look-ahead planning, and production tracking
  • Proven ability to lead, develop, and align large, multidisciplinary project teams across direct hire and subcontracted workforces
  • Demonstrated excellence in contract administration, change management, and project financial management
  • Exceptional communication skills — written, verbal, and executive-level presentation — across all internal and external stakeholder groups
  • Experience developing subcontracting strategies, managing bid packages, and leading the full project setup process
  • Proficiency in project management platforms (Procore, Primavera P6, MS Project, or equivalent) and Microsoft Office Suite
  • BS in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or a related field — OR equivalent combination of education and demonstrably exceptional field experience

Preferred

  • Experience managing construction programs in excess of $100M across commercial, institutional, healthcare, or industrial sectors
  • Experience as a proposal or pursuit manager on competitive construction bids and project pursuits
  • Familiarity with design-build, design-assist, or CMAR delivery methods
  • OSHA 30-Hour Construction certification (current)
  • PMP, CCM, or equivalent professional project management certification
  • MS in Construction Management, Engineering, or Business Administration
