Job description

The Sr. Manager, Capital Projects is a subject matter expert that provides guidance and support in all planning and scheduling aspects of capital spend. This person will own the CAR process and through coordination with project owners and finance, frequently deliver the capital spending forecast. This role reports to the VP of Capital Projects & Procurement and supports all sites. 

Responsibilities

  • Using the Four Pillars of Operational Discipline, this position is responsible for (5) key deliverables:
  • Update and maintain the capital plan to provide current, budgeted and strategic spending forecasts.
  • Own and maintain CAR process, procedures and workflows for capital planning and manage project approval process.
  • Establish, document and maintain a monthly, quarterly and annual capital spending and forecasting process.
  • Facilitate capital spending communication between operations leadership, project management and finance to ensure accuracy and credibility in capital forecasting.
  • Identify and ensure key capital spending metrics are measured and reported, enabling continuous improvement and sustainability around this aspect of capital management.
  • Manage a team of Portfolio Manager, Project Manager, Construction Managers and Project Controls support to define, develop business case, and deliver capital projects to support ongoing operations at Enviva.
  • Adapt existing IT solutions to improve the efficiency of the CAR approval process and storage of documentation.
  • Ensures projects establish credible schedules based on scope, complexity, project development time and execution, environmental permitting, capacity and growth plans and planned outage feasibility reflected using critical path evaluations, project baselines, contingency analysis, resources loading, awareness of operational budgeting, productivity targets, and engineering best practices.
  • Collaborate with and guide other planning and scheduling resources across the company on capital policies, procedure, and workflow.
  • Aids project teams by: securing the right resource(s) for capital planning and prioritization; mentoring, coaching and training those less experienced or knowledgeable on capital process, procedures and forecasting; interface with leadership when appropriate for insight on issues, concerns, prioritization and capital strategy; auditing schedules or plans in such a manner to influence or direct credibility, control, and success.
  • Identify capital metrics, and implement roll out of metrics for reporting across all segments, in a systemic manner, helping and not overwhelming those responsible for reporting, and ensuring training with understanding.
  • Lead and facilitate interactive capital planning sessions across company at various stages of project development and execution to ensure alignment and success. This accountability could be leading and facilitating or ensuring outside resources are providing support.
  • Champion conducting lessons learned and continuous improvement sessions for planning, scheduling and forecasting.
  • Works closely with Engineering, Project Management and Operations to deliver balance between cost and schedule aspect of project management.
  • Participates in meetings in support of capital governance.

Qualifications 

  • Bachelor's degree required preferably in an engineering discipline and a minimum of ten (10) years of capital project and/or project management experience.
  • Proven ability to coach and mentor individuals and teams.
  • Must be data-driven and possess a high level of attention to detail.
  • Safety focus on all aspects of project execution from development & design to commissioning.
  • Must be a self-starter with ability to prioritize workload.
  • Demonstrated sense of urgency and sound judgment in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills with the ability to speak to a diverse audience spanning from staff to executive levels.
  • Ability to develop and implement strategic plans through persuasion, education and training.
  • Demonstrated presentation, training and performance assessment skills.
  • Ability to work independently make effective and critical decisions often with limited information and oversight.
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate with and include others in the organization.
  • Highly proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint with the ability to learn other applications related to the job.
  • Must be a self-starter with ability to prioritize workload.

Working Conditions

  • Must be able to work in outdoor environments and occasionally in temperatures above 100 degrees and below 32 degrees
  • Willing and able to work in a hot, humid, cold and noisy industrial environment
  • Willing and able to maintain strict adherence to safety rules and regulations, to include wearing safety equipment.

Physical Requirements

  • Willing and able to perform tasks such as lifting, walking, climbing, stooping, standing, pushing and/or pulling for up to twelve (12) hours a day
  • Willing and able to work around moving equipment and machinery
  • Willing and able to pull and lift, up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to safely and successfully perform the essential job functions consistent with the ADA and other federal, state and local standards, including meeting qualitative and/or quantitative productivity standards.
