A Project Accountant Manager is a professional responsible for overseeing the financial aspects of specific projects within an organization. They manage budgets, track project costs, ensure compliance with accounting standards, and prepare financial reports for project stakeholders. Their role also involves coordinating with project managers and other departments to ensure projects stay within budget and financial objectives are met. Additionally, they may supervise a team of project accountants and support decision-making by providing financial insights throughout a project's lifecycle.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a project accountant manager?

To thrive as a Project Accountant Manager, you need strong financial management, project accounting expertise, and a degree in accounting or finance, often supported by a CPA or similar certification. Familiarity with project management software (like MS Project), ERP systems (such as SAP or Oracle), and advanced Excel skills is crucial. Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate clearly with both finance teams and project stakeholders set top performers apart. These competencies ensure projects stay within budget, financial risks are minimized, and reporting is accurate for effective decision-making.

How does a project accountant manager typically collaborate with project managers and other departments to ensure accurate financial reporting?

A Project Accountant Manager works closely with project managers, operations teams, and finance departments to oversee budget tracking, cost forecasting, and financial compliance for multiple projects. Job description

Project Accountant
Location: Memphis, TN

Gateway Group Personnel has partnered with an established, nationally recognized professional services firm to identify an experienced Project Accountant for its Memphis office.

This is a highly visible accounting role that works closely with Project Managers and senior leaders throughout the life cycle of client projects.  The Project Accountant will be responsible for ensuring accurate and timely project accounting, revenue recognition, billing and financial administration while serving as an important liaison between the firm's accounting function and its project teams.

The successful candidate will combine strong accounting fundamentals with exceptional attention to detail, responsiveness, organization and communication skills.  This opportunity is particularly well suited for an accountant who enjoys working directly with operational professionals rather than exclusively within a traditional corporate accounting department.

Responsibilities
  • Partner closely with Project Managers and senior leaders throughout the project life cycle.
  • Establish and maintain new projects within the accounting system.
  • Prepare percentage-of-completion revenue recognition.
  • Manage monthly project billing and invoicing.
  • Review project financial information for accuracy and resolve discrepancies.
  • Process consultant and vendor invoices associated with projects.
  • Monitor accounts receivable aging and communicate with clients regarding collections.
  • Maintain accurate project financial records and supporting documentation.
  • Serve as a financial resource to project teams and help translate accounting information for non-financial professionals.
  • Develop strong, responsive working relationships across the organization.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting required.
  • 3+ years of relevant accounting experience.
  • Project accounting or professional services experience strongly preferred.
  • Architecture, engineering, design, construction consulting or other project-based industry experience is particularly attractive.
  • Strong understanding of billing, accounts receivable, accounts payable and revenue recognition.
  • Excellent organizational skills with a demonstrated commitment to accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Strong sense of urgency and ability to respond promptly to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to effectively manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office; advanced Excel skills preferred.
  • Experience with Deltek Vantagepoint or Vision is highly desirable.

The Opportunity
This position offers the opportunity to join a successful, collaborative professional services organization with an established presence in Memphis and nationally. The Project Accountant will have meaningful interaction with project leadership and play an important role in the financial performance and successful execution of the firm's client engagements.

The organization offers a competitive compensation and benefits package, professional growth opportunities, and a collegial, team-oriented work environment.
