Job description

Our client is seeking an experienced accounting professional to provide leadership and hands-on support within its Inventory Accounting function. This role will be responsible for the accounting activities associated with a designated operating facility, including inventory accounting, month-end close, reconciliations, financial analysis, and cross-functional support.

The ideal candidate will bring a strong foundation in inventory accounting, manufacturing, refining, energy, or other complex operational environments. This individual will be comfortable working independently, managing multiple priorities, and partnering with both operations and finance teams to ensure accurate inventory valuation and financial reporting.

This engagement offers an opportunity to make an immediate impact within a fast-paced accounting environment while supporting critical month-end and inventory management processes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Own inventory accounting activities for an assigned operating facility.
  • Account for inventory purchases, transfers, adjustments, and inventory movement transactions.
  • Prepare and review monthly inventory reconciliations and supporting schedules.
  • Calculate and analyze beginning and ending inventory balances during month-end close.
  • Support accounting for inventory financing and inventory-related contractual arrangements.
  • Participate in the monthly financial close process, including journal entries, account reconciliations, and variance analysis.
  • Investigate and resolve inventory discrepancies and accounting variances.
  • Partner closely with operations, supply chain, and finance teams to ensure accurate inventory reporting.
  • Assist with process improvements, internal controls, and documentation related to inventory accounting.
  • Support audit requests and provide detailed accounting support when needed.
  • Contribute to special projects and ad hoc analysis as assigned.
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, including significant exposure to inventory accounting.
  • Strong understanding of inventory accounting principles, account reconciliations, and month-end close processes.
  • Experience working in manufacturing, energy, industrial, distribution, or other inventory-intensive environments preferred.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including data analysis, reconciliations, and reporting.
  • Experience with ERP systems and large-volume transactional environments.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to work independently and effectively manage competing priorities in a deadline-driven environment.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to collaborate across multiple business functions.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior supervisory or team leadership experience.
  • Experience with SAP S/4HANA.
  • Experience with BlackLine or similar reconciliation and close management tools.
  • Exposure to commodity, refining, petrochemical, or energy industry accounting environments.
  • Experience with RightAngle or comparable trading and inventory management systems.
