Position: Extracurricular Programs Manager, Camps
Reports to: Senior Manager, Extracurricular Programs
Science World is a mission-based, charitable organization that supports the development of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art & Design and Math) literacy across British Columbia. Our mission is to ignite wonder and empower dreams through science and nature and our purpose is Science for All.
Our Science for All strategy is to revitalize Science World with a substantial capital plan to replace critical infrastructure, enhance the visitor experience and develop new content across all our channels under the themes of Regeneration of the Planet, Human Health, and Inclusion. Our plan is to ensure that people throughout British Columbia, especially under-represented communities, have access to high quality, informal STEAM learning. Through our onsite, online and outreach programs, Science World seeks to spark curiosity and wonder in STEAM and support development of talent across communities in the province.

As a facility, Science World is generally open to the public seven days a week, with some extended evening hours in the summer months. Typical office hours are Monday to Friday 8:00am – 5:30pm, with front-facing and operational teams also working a variety of shifts including weekends, holidays and evenings. Hours of work and other related requirements will be scheduled according to business needs and this may include special events on evenings,
Position Description:
Reporting to the Senior Manager, Extracurricular Programs, the Extracurricular Programs Manager, Camps is an energetic and self-motivated person who manages Science World’s camps programs across various locations in the lower mainland. The successful candidate demonstrates a sense of playful curiosity combined with a strong background in developing and delivering content that fires the imaginations of a wide variety of audiences. They will have strong people leadership skills, excellent attention to detail, and a desire to contribute their own ideas to our growing camps portfolio.
The Extracurricular Programs Manager, Camps will manage a large seasonal team of camp leaders, and a small year-round administrative and development team. They will be the lead on safeguarding children in the care of camps and will be prepared to respond to children with a variety of different needs, including those who are in crisis. The successful candidate will have a working knowledge of safeguarding in a camps/child-care setting and will have or be willing to obtain First Aid level 2.
As part of a wider portfolio, the Extracurricular Programs Manager, Camps will provide cross-support for other programs including the Super Science Club after school program, and the Future Science Leaders teen evening program as per operational needs.
Important Availability Commitment:
Science Camps operate seasonally during school vacations and pro-d days year-round. Vacation during these operational periods is not always possible.
Key Responsibilities:
- Hire, train and manage staff for Science World’s science camp programs
- Manage registration (Including bursary programs) and customer interactions for Science World Camps
- Support the Experiential Learning Specialist, Camps to create, document and evaluate camp curriculum
- Manage the Junior Camp Leader program, in collaboration with the Specialist and Coordinator
- Establish and maintain excellent cross-departmental communication to ensure that camp logistics run smoothly and in harmony with other building activities
- Establish and maintain excellent communication with camp families to ensure accurate record-keeping and positive behaviour management conversations
- Manage the day-to-day operations of camp, including camps at Science World, and camps taking place in offsite locations, supporting the work of the Specialist, Coordinator, Supervisors (In-Charge) and Camp Leaders. (For example: to ensure supervision ratios, troubleshoot programming issues, solve logistical and behavioural challenges and answer questions from camper families)
- Monitor program budget and materials; contribute to yearly operational planning and budgeting.
- Operate within the philosophy, culture and values of Science World
- Perform other related duties as required to fulfill any changing business needs of this role
Qualifications:
- A degree in Education or a minimum of 5+ years of relevant experience
- Proven experience working with Science World’s target audience in an informal educational environment
- Experience with leading camp-based programs
- Experience recruiting, training, supervising and scheduling a program delivery team
- Excellent communication skills and research skills, including presentations to groups of varied audiences (adults, youth and children)
- Strong collaboration and teamwork skills are essential
- Demonstrated dependability, reliability and flexibility, capable of working independently and as part of a team
- Strong problem solving, organizations and time management skills
- Possession of a Class 5 driver’s license or equivalent strongly recommended
- Possession of a First Aid certificate required or will need to be obtained upon hiring
- Satisfactory completion of a Vulnerable Sector Check will be required
- Must be able to lift at least 12kgs
The pay range for this position is $67,000 - $70,000 per year.
