Programs Manager information

What does a programs manager do?

A Programs Manager is responsible for overseeing and coordinating multiple projects or initiatives within an organization. They ensure that these programs align with the company’s strategic goals, manage resources, set timelines, and track progress. Programs Managers work closely with project managers and team members, addressing any issues that arise and ensuring that deliverables are met on time and within budget. Their role often involves communicating with stakeholders, developing program strategies, and measuring the overall success of the programs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a programs manager?

To thrive as a Programs Manager, you need strong project management skills, strategic planning abilities, and often a bachelor’s degree in business, management, or a related field. Familiarity with project management tools like Asana, Trello, or Microsoft Project, as well as certifications such as PMP or PRINCE2, is highly valuable. Excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills help Programs Managers motivate teams and coordinate across departments. These skills ensure effective execution of programs, alignment with organizational goals, and the successful delivery of projects on time and within budget.

How does a programs manager typically collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure project success?

Programs Managers frequently serve as the main point of coordination between various departments such as product development, marketing, finance, and operations. They facilitate regular meetings, set clear milestones, and ensure alignment on project goals and timelines. Effective Programs Managers are proactive in identifying potential bottlenecks and work closely with stakeholders to resolve issues quickly. This collaborative approach not only helps in delivering successful outcomes but also fosters a culture of open communication and teamwork across the organization.

Position: Navy ERP Program Manager

Depot Maintenance Activity Group (DMAG) / Supply Management Activity Group (SMAG) Augmentation Support

We are seeking an experienced Program Manager to lead and provide subject matter expertise in support of Navy ERP augmentation efforts for the DMAG and SMAG. The candidate will serve as the on-site program lead, directly managing Navy ERP system support activities, augmentation planning, and corrective action coordination while leveraging deep knowledge of Navy ERP (SAP) functionality and NWCF financial processes as they relate to DMAG and SMAG operations. The PM will also guide the development of data products and decision support tools within the Advana/War Data Platform that advance both operational objectives and broader business intelligence goals.

This position is critical to providing programmatic oversight, client relationship management, and technical direction to a distributed team supporting the Navy in addressing Navy ERP system challenges, resolving depot maintenance and supply management process nuances, and improving overall operational and financial reporting accuracy across DMAG and SMAG activities. The PM will be the primary point of contact for government stakeholders and will be responsible for ensuring quality, timeliness, and compliance of all deliverables across the task order.

Key Responsibilities & Duties

  • Serve as on-site Program Manager and primary point of contact for government clients, DFAS representatives, and Navaide leadership - managing task order execution across cost, schedule, performance, and staffing, and ensuring all deliverables meet DoD FMR and applicable operational standards.
  • Act as the bridge between the data analytics team, Navy ERP functional SMEs, and government stakeholders, keeping data products aligned with NWCF business rules and DMAG/SMAG reporting requirements, and providing regular updates on program status, risks, and issues.
  • Lead Navy ERP augmentation support for DMAG and SMAG - including functional system support, process improvement, requirements analysis, and corrective action coordination - while managing and mentoring a distributed team with up to 25% travel to satellite locations.
  • Provide senior-level subject matter expertise in Navy ERP (SAP) processes within the context of DMAG accounting and SMAG supply management operations, including work order processing, supply and financial transaction processing, cost accounting, and operational reporting.
  • Translate Navy ERP Tier 2/3 technical and system nuances into actionable solutions for DMAG and SMAG operational teams and client stakeholders, ensuring issues are addressed effectively and sustainably.
  • Oversee the development and governance of data products within the Advana/War Data Platform - including dashboards, data pipelines, and reporting tools - ensuring deliverables meet DoD data standards, Advana platform policies, and DMAG/SMAG financial reporting and decision support requirements.
  • Identify root causes of system and process discrepancies within DMAG and SMAG Navy ERP environments and lead the development and implementation of sustainable process and system improvement recommendations.
  • Maintain awareness of evolving DoD financial management policy, Advana platform developments, and Navy ERP system changes as they relate to DMAG and SMAG operations, proactively adjusting program approach as needed.

Required Qualifications

  • Ideal candidates will have 8-10 years of progressive experience in DoD financial or supply management, ERP consulting, or ERP augmentation support, with at least 3 years in a program or team lead capacity. Although DoD is preferred, commercial experience will be considered with the appropriate ERP knowledge.
  • Demonstrated expertise in ERP (SAP ECC or S/4HANA) functional support.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience in DMAG and/or SMAG operational environments or comparable Navy Working Capital Fund depot maintenance and supply management accounting activities.
  • Hands-on experience with Navy ERP at Tier 2 or Tier 3 support levels, with strong functional knowledge of processes and system configurations relevant to depot-level maintenance accounting and supply management operations.
  • Strong understanding of Navy ERP modules related to FI, FM, SD, MM, PM, and CO, with demonstrated ability to troubleshoot and advise on cross-functional processes within a DMAG or SMAG context.
  • Proven experience managing teams and programs within a DoD financial management, depot maintenance, supply management, or ERP consulting environment.
  • Familiarity with the Advana/War Data Platform including experience overseeing or directing the development of data analytics products, dashboards, or decision support tools within a DoD enterprise data ecosystem.
  • Ability to bridge Navy ERP functional domain knowledge with data analytics capabilities, translating DMAG and SMAG business and operational requirements into actionable data product specifications for a technical analytics team.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills with demonstrated ability to operate effectively across technical, operational, and executive domains.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with the financial and supply chain processes unique to Marine Corps or Navy depot activities - including work order costing, reimbursable accounting, and inventory management - and how those processes are represented and managed within Navy ERP.
  • Knowledge of DFAS processes, Treasury interfaces, Defense Departmental Reporting System (DDRS), Defense Daily Expenditure File (DDEF), or the Advana analytics platform as they relate to Depot Maintenance Activity Group and Supply Management Activity Group reporting requirements.
  • Hands-on experience building or managing data products within Advana/War Data Platform, including familiarity with data ingestion, transformation, and visualization tools (e.g., Qlik, Tableau, or Power BI within the Advana environment) and DoD data governance standards.
  • Experience translating Navy ERP financial and supply data - including NWCF cost, revenue, and transaction data relevant to DMAG and SMAG - into structured data models or analytics products that support operational decision making and executive reporting.
  • Familiarity with BSO-level financial and supply operations and command-level ERP user management or training coordination.
  • PMP certification or equivalent program management credential preferred.

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, Information Systems, or a related field required.
  • Advanced degree preferred but not required.
