Programs Intern information
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Programs Intern, and why are they important?
What kinds of projects and responsibilities can a Programs Intern expect to handle during their internship?
What are Programs Interns?
What is the difference between Programs Intern vs Project Coordinator?
| Aspect | Programs Intern | Project Coordinator |
|---|---|---|
| Required Credentials | Typically pursuing or holding a degree in related field | Often requires experience or certification in project management |
| Work Environment | Internship setting, learning-focused, entry-level | Professional setting, responsible for coordinating project activities |
| Employer & Industry Usage | Nonprofits, government agencies, educational institutions | Corporations, nonprofits, government sectors |
| Search & Comparison Intent | Entry-level, internship opportunities, learning roles | Entry to mid-level roles, project management responsibilities |
The Programs Intern role is primarily an entry-level, learning-focused position often held by students or recent graduates. In contrast, a Project Coordinator has more responsibility in managing and coordinating specific projects, requiring some experience or certification. While both roles are common in similar industries, the Programs Intern is more about gaining experience, whereas the Project Coordinator handles ongoing project execution.

BACKGROUND
About Energy Trust of Oregon
Energy Trust of Oregon is an independent nonprofit organization dedicated to energy efficiency and renewable energy development. We serve Oregon customers of Portland General Electric, Pacific Power, NW Natural, Cascade Natural Gas, and Avista, as well as SW Washington customers of NW Natural. Year over year, Energy Trust is recognized as one of the 100 Best Nonprofits to Work for in Oregon.
Our Vision
Clean, affordable energy for everyone.
Our Commitment to Diversity
We recognize the lack of diversity in our industry and actively seek to address it through our hiring and retention practices and our values. We believe every person's lived experience is essential to building a vibrant culture and delivering effective services to all customers we serve. We are committed to the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion, and we encourage candidates with diverse backgrounds and experience to apply.
Our Location
Energy Trust offers a range of work location options, including remote, hybrid, and in-office. This position will represent Energy Trust in public settings and potentially at community events. We are open to candidates who live throughout Oregon and Washington.
What We're Looking For:
The Evaluation Intern will support Energy Trust's Evaluation team by conducting both quantitative and qualitative research related to program performance and customer insights. Energy Trust conducts a variety of customer surveys, including Fast Feedback, which tracks participant satisfaction, and the Customer Awareness and Participation Survey (CAPS), which measures awareness of and participation in Energy Trust programs. CAPS is administered every few years to assess how equitably Energy Trust serves customers across its service area, with particular attention to priority populations and historically underserved groups.Â
This role will involve quantitative data analysis using survey datasets, as well as qualitative research based on literature reviews and survey findings. Quantitative analysis may include regression analysis, mapping, and other data visualizations, while qualitative methods will include scoping and designing customer insights research. The qualitative work will include close coordination with the Program Marketing team, including conducting an internal literature review to document existing marketing research. The intern will develop memos, infographics, and short reports to communicate findings.Â
This internship offers hands-on experience working with large datasets, performing analysis in SQL and R, creating data visualizations and maps, and designing qualitative research. The intern will also gain exposure to Energy Trust's programs, including marketing, evaluation processes, data systems, and approaches to measuring equitable customer participation and gathering customer insights.Â
The intern will report to the Senior Project Manager - Evaluation. This is a hybrid position with an expectation of attending at least quarterly in-person meetings and all-staff gatherings at or near Energy Trust's office. There is also the option to work from the office more frequently. The Evaluation team typically works together in the office every Tuesday.Â
This is a temporary, part-time internship requiring approximately 15-20 hours per week, with a schedule to be determined upon hire. The internship is limited to a maximum of 1,000 total hours.Â

- This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
