What is a programme manager?

A Programme Manager is a professional responsible for overseeing multiple related projects within an organization, ensuring they align with business objectives and deliver value. They coordinate project managers, manage resources, and communicate with stakeholders to ensure successful program delivery. Unlike project managers who focus on individual projects, programme managers maintain a big-picture view, managing interdependencies and risks across projects. Their work is essential in achieving strategic goals and driving organizational change.

What is the difference between Programme Manager vs Project Manager?

AspectProgramme ManagerProject Manager
Primary FocusOversees multiple related projects to achieve strategic objectivesManages individual projects to deliver specific outputs
ScopeBroader, long-term initiativesSpecific, short-term deliverables
ResponsibilitiesAligns projects with organizational goals, manages interdependenciesPlans, executes, and closes projects within scope, time, and budget
CredentialsOften PMP or PgMP, relevant experience in program managementPMP or similar project management certifications

While both roles require strong project management skills and certifications like PMP, a Programme Manager focuses on coordinating multiple related projects to achieve strategic business objectives, whereas a Project Manager concentrates on delivering specific project outputs within defined constraints.

How does a programme manager typically balance multiple projects and ensure effective communication among project teams?

A Programme Manager often oversees several related projects simultaneously, which requires strong organizational and communication skills. They manage interdependencies and allocate resources while regularly coordinating with project managers, stakeholders, and cross-functional teams to align goals and timelines. Effective Programme Managers establish regular check-ins, use collaborative tools, and create transparent reporting structures to keep everyone informed and address issues proactively. This approach helps prevent bottlenecks and ensures that programme objectives are met efficiently.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a programme manager?

To thrive as a Programme Manager, you need expertise in project management, strategic planning, and stakeholder coordination, often supported by a relevant degree and certifications like PMP or PRINCE2. Familiarity with project management tools such as Microsoft Project, Jira, or Asana and experience with budgeting and resource allocation systems are typically required. Exceptional communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills help Programme Managers navigate complex projects and motivate cross-functional teams. These competencies ensure programmes are delivered on time, within scope and budget, and aligned with organizational goals.

As a Fortune 100, Nasdaq-listed provider, we connect clients to the global markets – focusing on innovation, human connection, and providing world-class products and services to all types of investors.

Whether you want to forge a career connecting our retail clients to potential trading opportunities, or ingrain yourself in the world of institutional investing, StoneX Group is made up of four business segments that offer endless potential for progression and growth.

Business Segment Overview: Engage in a deep variety of business-critical activities that keep our company running efficiently. From strategic marketing and financial management to human resources and operational oversight, you’ll have the opportunity to optimize processes and implement game-changing policies.

Position purpose: StoneX is looking to recruit a Program Manager to support the Securities Operations business, based out of Birmingham, Alabama. The successful candidate will have previous experience leading complex, large-scale technical program deliveries spanning multiple geographies, business units and platforms across the securities post-trade lifecycle.

Working closely with the EPMO, Securities Operations leadership, the Global Middle Office, Technology, Product and third-party vendors, you will drive delivery of a strategic, multi-year transformation program – modernizing StoneX’s unified securities backbone (including platforms such as BETA, RTS, NIRA and OrderHub), advancing the Global Middle Office target operating model, and delivering real-time settlement capabilities. This is a great opportunity for someone who thrives in a fast-paced, challenging and collaborative working environment and who is results-driven.

Primary duties will include:

You will be responsible for driving overall delivery of a strategic program of work across Securities Operations. Your role is to define the different stages of implementation and ensure they are met. Your main roles and responsibilities will be as follows, but are not limited to:

  • Work with Securities Operations, Product, commercial teams and senior stakeholders to identify program scope and objectives across the trade lifecycle – order management, execution, clearing, settlement, reconciliation and reporting
  • Work with delivery teams and solution architects to build out agreed scope, define requirements and build robust plans for delivery across the securities platform estate (BETA, RTS, NIRA, OrderHub and related systems)
  • Define the projects and features that make up the program, bringing consensus to the most efficient way to deliver value to the organization as quickly as possible
  • Monitor and assess program performance, overseeing delivery of the projects and features that make up the program, ensuring completion on time, to scope and within budget
  • Take overall responsibility for ensuring everyone on the program is clear on what needs to happen, when it needs to happen by, how it is going to happen and who by
  • Identify, track and monitor dependencies across platforms, the Global Middle Office and downstream operations teams
  • Secure resource commitment and hold teams to account
  • Identify high-level risks and issues and track them through to resolution, escalating where needed
  • Partner with Operations, Risk, Compliance and Technology to ensure regulatory and control requirements are embedded in delivery
  • Report on program progress, including spend to date (hrs and $)
  • Clearly, concisely and accurately communicate program progress at regular intervals to sponsors and steering committees
  • Build relationships with stakeholders, delivery teams, vendors and EPMO team members
  • Identify, address and resolve differences between individuals and/or interest groups

To land this role you will need:

  • A professional qualification in project / program management (e.g., PMP, PgMP, PRINCE2 or MSP) is preferred
  • 7+ years of full-time program management experience or equivalent
  • Proven success delivering large and complex change initiatives at program level, ideally in financial services and with budgets of over $2m / 10,000 person days
  • Knowledge of securities operations and the post-trade lifecycle (order management, execution, clearing, settlement, reconciliation and reporting) is a must
  • Familiarity with securities platforms such as BETA, RTS, NIRA, OrderHub, or comparable clearing, settlement and middle-office systems
  • Comfortable working with internal teams of 50+ people across multiple geographies and time zones
  • A key collaborator – inclusive, results-driven, who leads by example and brings the best out of teams
  • Ability to work with people, both internally and externally, to build support to achieve intended outcomes
  • Knowledge of complex technical ecosystems and financial services preferred
  • Direct experience working with IT development teams, platforms and solution architects
  • Ability to quickly adapt to shifting priorities, demands and timelines
  • Ability to thrive in a challenging, fast-paced environment
  • Strong leadership qualities with the capability to manage diverse teams
  • Ability to master and navigate new subject domains quickly
  • Confident in communicating with C-suites and technical delivery teams
  • Experience in Jira and Confluence, Agile and Waterfall
  • A background in business analysis would be an advantage.
