Exciting Opportunities with Share Food Program! We are looking for a Volunteer Program Assistant to add to our team!

Share Food Program ("Share") is the leading hunger relief organization in the Greater Philadelphia region and one of the largest independent food banks in the nation. Share feeds hundreds of thousands of individuals each month-more than half of whom are children and seniors. The ripple effects of the pandemic, record rates of inflation, and critical cuts to government assistance benefits have plunged even more people into hunger and poverty. Philadelphia has the highest rate of poverty of any major city in the U.S., and food insecurity is a public health crisis. Our network of caring volunteers, dedicated professionals, and generous donors works to bring nourishing food to our neighbors in need.

Since 2022, the need for Share's services has increased by 120% and the need will only increase with the passage of recent legislation. Share is committed to being at the forefront of advocacy fighting against these policies and ensuring everyone has access to food. Funding for advocacy and expanding its major donor program are strategic goals for Share. Furthermore, Share has successfully completed two stages of its capital campaign to expand and revolutionize its Philadelphia warehouse headquarters at the heart of Share's operations, to help more neighbors in need.

  • Perform all pre-shift preparation tasks and greet all volunteers that enter the warehouse prior to the shift.
  • Communicate to coordinator any supplies that are running low or may need to be replaced or re-ordered
  • Help with receiving most deliveries to the warehouse by signing BOLs (bills of lading), counting what is brought over, and making necessary changes to both copies to reflect the actual delivery.
  • Deliver full orientation, assign roles to volunteers, and ensure all volunteers are trained for the day's tasks.
  • Collaborate with SFBP staff to record and sort inventory and ensure proper disposal of damaged items.
  • Track and record community service hours for volunteers as needed and provide necessary documentation of set hours.
  • Oversee volunteers, volunteer leaders, and Mayor's Office seniors during the shift, ensuring that packing goals are met, that safety is prioritized, and that everything runs smoothly and efficiently.
  • The following tasks can be delegated to interns and volunteer leaders, but VPA is responsible for ensuring their completion:
  1. Line Prep: restocking food stations and supplies
  2. Place finished pallets in designated areas
  3. Removing any remaining full Gaylords and placing in the respective area
  4. Regular use of the manual jack, electric jack and baler/compactor (Lock and charge machinery in designated areas)
  5. Maintain clean and organized orientation area with equipment and updated signage
  6. Use the pallet jack to clear all delivered pallets of product from the front room and carefully stack and place them along the wall in the main warehouse room.
  • Additional duties as required

Preferred Experience and Abilities:

  • Proven experience working in warehousing, manufacturing, or production
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Customer service experience
  • Strong work ethic

Physical Requirements:

  • Position requires the ability to operate a forklift
  • Position requires standing or walking up to 75% of the time
  • Position requires repetitive hand motion
  • Position requires lifting to 60 pounds at times

Environmental Risks:

  • Position includes potential exposure to fumes, loud noises, vibration, extreme temperature, allergens, and confined spaces up to 80% of the time.

COMPENSATION

Hourly rate is $20.00; 8:30-4:30, Tuesday-Saturday
