What is a program manager?

Program managers are professionals responsible for overseeing multiple related projects within an organization, ensuring they align with strategic goals and deliver expected outcomes. They coordinate the efforts of project managers, manage resources, set priorities, and address risks and issues that arise across the program. Unlike project managers who focus on individual projects, program managers take a broader view, ensuring that all projects within a program work together effectively to achieve long-term business objectives.

What does a program manager do?

The job of a program manager is to plan, organize, and coordinate management programs or external programs for a business or institution. As a program manager, your duties vary depending on the type of organization for which you work, but many of the responsibilities for this role are similar or overlap. You typically supervise numerous associates and analysts who help prepare data and assessments about current programming and how it can be improved. You help to implement new programs for employees or customers and promote them through HR or outreach coordinators and marketing professionals. You also assess individual projects and how they interact with one another.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a program manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Program Manager, you need strong project management skills, strategic planning abilities, and a relevant degree, often supported by certifications like PMP or Agile. Familiarity with tools such as Microsoft Project, Jira, or Asana is essential for tracking progress and managing resources. Exceptional communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills help you motivate teams and navigate complex stakeholder environments. These competencies ensure that programs are delivered on time, within scope, and aligned with organizational goals.

What are some common challenges program managers face when coordinating cross-functional teams?

Program Managers often encounter challenges such as aligning priorities across diverse teams, managing conflicting stakeholder expectations, and ensuring clear communication among departments with different workflows. Navigating these challenges requires strong negotiation and problem-solving skills, as well as the ability to build consensus and foster collaboration. Successful Program Managers proactively establish regular check-ins, promote transparency, and adapt strategies to keep projects on track and maintain team engagement.

Job description

Sensormatic Solutions, a leader in Loss Prevention, Inventory and Shopper Engagement Solutions, is looking for a Program Manager to lead global ServiceMax implementation projects. In this role, you will work across transformation leaders, functional business leaders, and IT teams to define scope, build disciplined plans, and deliver programs that meet schedule, budget, and quality expectations.
Role Overview
This is a hands-on program leadership role for someone who can bring structure, clear communication, and strong execution to complex global implementations. You will lead end-to-end planning and delivery, ensure functional teams stay aligned to program objectives, and provide leadership with clear, concise status on progress, risks, issues, and decisions.
Key Responsibilities
  • Lead global ServiceMax implementation projects from charter through closure, ensuring scope, schedule, budget, and deliverables are managed effectively.
  • Define the project charter, roles, tasks, milestones, budget, and measures of success.
  • Develop project estimates, integrated plans, and detailed execution timelines for end-to-end delivery.
  • Ensure requirements are captured accurately and completely, and support the management of scope changes and change requests.
  • Coordinate day-to-day execution across functional teams, IT teams, and project resources.
  • Track progress against milestones, manage dependencies, and maintain project documentation throughout the lifecycle.
  • Escalate issues, risks, and opportunities as needed and support timely resolution.
  • Prepare and present program status at regular accountability meetings and leadership reviews.
  • Support project closure activities, including lessons learned, documentation completion, and handover readiness.
  • Act as the link between assigned IT teams, business stakeholders, and transformation leadership to keep work aligned and moving forward.
How You Will Do It
  • Work closely with transformation and functional leaders to establish a clear program scope, business case, schedule, resources, and success measures.
  • Run kickoff and working sessions that align the team on objectives, deliverables, expectations, and decision points.
  • Lead recurring team meetings to track progress, identify blockers early, and convert issues into clear action plans.
  • Own the program schedule by documenting tasks, owners, dates, dependencies, and percent complete, then reviewing the critical path weekly.
  • Keep scope under control by documenting, communicating, and obtaining approval for any change before it is added to the plan.
  • Communicate clearly and honestly with stakeholders, bringing forward risks, unresolved issues, and recovery actions without delay.
  • Use structured problem-solving, sound judgment, and continuous improvement to remove obstacles and keep delivery on track.
  • Collaborate across functions with a one-team mindset, respecting different perspectives while focusing on the outcome that matters most.
  • Own your commitments with accountability and integrity, ensuring decisions are documented and follow-through is visible to all partners.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • 5-8 years of project management experience in a large multi-unit organization.
  • Experience with systems implementation projects.
  • Project Management accreditation such as APMP, PMI, Prince2, or equivalent preferred.
  • Strong communication, negotiation, analytical, and critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a global environment with cultural adaptability.
  • Experience managing virtual and remote teams.
  • Independent, innovative, and responsive working style.
  • Experience using structured problem-solving approaches and reporting tools, including Microsoft PowerPoint.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with business, IT, and leadership audiences.
  • Ability to travel 10-20%, especially during onboarding.
Nice to Have
  • ServiceMax experience.
  • Customer service and delivery experience.
  • Field service experience.
