Assistant/Associate/Professor of Law

Full-time, Exempt

On-campus, non-remote Contract, non-tenure track

Position Summary:


The Academic Success Program (ASP) serves students in the Juris Doctor (J.D.) program, various master’s programs, and Master of Law programs. The Program reinforces vital academic skills, provides support in substantive instruction areas, and provides bar exam support. Academic Success is a growing and vibrant department that values innovation and collaboration.


ASP answers directly to the Vice Dean for Students. The Associate Director reports to the Director of ASP and works closely with the Assistant Director of ASP, student mentors, and other faculty and staff. The Associate Director teaches core ASP courses, including: Foundations of Legal Analysis, Legal Methods, and bar readiness courses, as well as doctrinal courses, as needed.


The Associate Director is also responsible for presenting at ASP workshops; meeting with students individually; collaborating with faculty and staff; serving on faculty committees; and assisting the Director with administrative duties, including compiling, and filing mandatory reports. Additional responsibilities include attending school functions such as graduation, faculty meetings, and various other events throughout the year. Occasional availability on nights or weekends is required.


The Associate Director is eligible for a series of initial one or two-year contracts with the possibility of a long-term contract following successful review.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:


The Associate Director will work in collaboration with the Director and Assistant Director to do the following:

  • Provide individual counseling and tutoring for students about study habits, skills, tools for improvement, time management, outlining, exam preparation, and bar-related issues.
  • Meet with students to advise them on courses to take and how to maximize their law school experiences, particularly during registration season
  • Plan, implement, and design academic support programs for all students at VLGS. Programming ranges from law school skills to bar exam support.
  • Develop print and online resources for all students at VLGS.
  • Increase awareness of ASP services throughout campus. This includes participating in orientation and supporting faculty, staff, and students in utilizing ASP services.
  • Coordinate activities of Student Mentors and assist in Mentor selection, training, and support.
  • Teach ASP courses and other courses as assigned by the Vice Dean for Faculty.
  • Serve on institutional committees as assigned by the Vice Dean for Faculty.
  • Track and report student data for internal and external reporting purposes.
  • Coordinate with institutional partners, including bar preparation provider
  • Track bar admissions developments nationally.
  • Additional dues may be assigned.

Required Education, Skills, and Experience:

  • Juris Doctor degree required with license to practice law.
  • Two or more years of relevant experience in legal practice or higher education experience.
  • Experience in legal practice is a plus but not required.
  • Knowledge of learning theories.
  • Knowledge of legal theories.
  • Knowledge of or ability to learn ADA and FERPA regulations.
  • Knowledge of legal analytical and writing skills.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to navigate basic technology systems in a Windows/Office environment for email, scheduling, online meetings via Teams or other platforms, and various school-specific databases.
  • Understanding of and appreciation for inclusion, including the ability to work with students, faculty, and staff from diverse backgrounds, identities, and viewpoints.
