Job Goal: To provide guidance, counseling, coordination, consultation, referral and delivery of informational services. To assist in promoting parent involvement, community relations, program evaluation and curriculum support where appropriate.
Job Qualifications:
  1. Must have or be eligible for Certification as an Elementary School Counselor by the State of Delaware.
  2. Minimum of three years of successful professional experience at the elementary level, or one full year of supervised internship in a K-5 setting, which is part of the graduate degree program in counseling.
  3. Have the ability to cooperate with staff, parents/guardians, administration and community resource people.
  4. Have the ability to develop rapport with students.
  5. Be able to analyze and offer problem-solving techniques.
  6. Be able to empathize and understand students' concerns.
  7. Possess teaching skills to administer developmental guidance curriculum; organizational skills; computer literacy; and knowledge of the developmental guidance philosophy.

Essential Functions:
  1. Assists students in evaluating their aptitudes and abilities through the interpretation of individual standardized test scores and other pertinent data.
  2. Works to discover and develop special abilities of students.
  3. Works to resolve student's educational handicaps.
  4. Works to prevent students from dropping out of school.
  5. Remains readily available to students so as to provide counseling that will lead each student to increased personal growth, self-understanding, and maturity.
  6. Works with students on an individual basis in the solution of personal problems related to such problems as home and family relations, health and emotional adjustment.
  7. Maintains student records and protects their confidentiality. Initiates, assembles, maintains, and interprets accurate health records, attendance records, cumulative progress records, activity records, and uniform transcript records for assigned students.
  8. Assists in the orientation of new faculty members.
  9. Provides in-service training in guidance for teachers and student teachers.
  10. Works with teachers and other staff members to familiarize them with the general range of services offered by the student personnel services department, and to improve the educational prospects of individual students being counseled.
  11. Advises administrators and faculty on the matters of student discipline. Takes an active role in interpreting the school's objectives to students, parents and the community at large.
