Job description
The Trauma Program provides a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to caring for injured patients across the continuum of care. The Trauma Program oversees continuous performance improvement. Trauma cases are monitored through the trauma registry and reviewed to evaluate clinical outcomes, identify opportunities for improvement, and ensure compliance with national standards and best practices. This ongoing assessment supports patient safety, operational excellence, and readiness for trauma center verification every three years.

The Trauma Coordinator assists the Trauma Program Director (TPD) by assuring that OHSU fulfills all requirements as a Level I Trauma designated center for the State of Oregon and verified by the American College of Surgeons. In collaboration with the TPD, the Trauma Coordinator ensures that the program is meeting the mission of University Hospital.
The Trauma Program also plays a vital role in education and community outreach. In addition, the program promotes injury prevention through community initiatives focused on areas such as fall prevention, motor vehicle safety, violence prevention, and public awareness. Through its commitment to clinical excellence, quality improvement, education, and injury prevention, the Trauma Program serves as an essential resource for delivering high-quality trauma care and improving the health and safety of the communities it serves.
Travel throughout the Pacific Northwest is an expectation. Occasional holiday and weekend work is required. The trauma environment is unpredictable and often stressful. Injury prevention activities will involve interaction with the general public.
1 Clinical:
Stays knowledgeable in current care modalities for injured patients by reviewing the literature, attending conferences, and participating in OHSU trauma educational activities. Creates and implements patient care guidelines, protocols and policies.
2 Performance Improvement: Identifies opportunities for improvement through concurrent patient rounds, discussions with patients/families or interactions with staff Is responsible for oversight of the Trauma Service PIPS (Process Improvement/Patient Safety) activities and works with the TPD, other trauma coordinator, and Medical Director to coordinate the PIPS process. Monitors Practice Guideline compliance, clinical outcomes and system issues using the trauma registry Collaboratively manages SBIRT Guideline compliance with Injury Prevention coordinator, the social work department, trauma unit's SPLs and nursing to ensure monitoring and compliance.
3 Trauma Registry: Assists TPD with supervision of the registry data collection, coding, scoring and validation of data entered into the trauma registry. Ensures compliance with reporting requirements Ensures data integrity and confidentiality Continually ensures data is meeting needs of customers and adjusts collection as required Ensures data is appropriately available for research and PI activities Participates in Trauma Registry Staff meetings on a regular basis
4 Education: Assists with the development of trauma education and in-service programs for trauma nursing at OHSU upon request Ensures trauma nurses are meeting educational requirements Coordinates outreach education Actively participates in the planning and conduct of the Fall Trauma Nursing Conference and NW States Trauma Conference annually
5 Research: Participates in ongoing research relevant to the trauma patient. Assists researchers in appropriately retrieving data from the trauma registry
6 Outreach: Oversees the timely follow up with referring hospitals Coordinates outreach education upon request, including but not limited to: RTTDC, Grand Rounds, invited speaking engagements, Stop the Bleed, etc. Oversees the timely provision of follow up information to referring hospitals and EMS providers as appropriate. Participate in community outreach initiatives in support of the injury prevention program.
Required Qualifications- 5 years of clinical inpatient trauma nursing experience in Level 1 or 2 trauma center, ED or Critical Care
- BSN Graduates: Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing from a program accredited by Commission of Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or Commission for Nursing Education Accreditation (CNEA) 30 days before start date.
- ADN Graduates: Associate Degree in Nursing from an accredited program 30 days before the start date.
- Associate degree Nurses required to enroll in BSN program within 3 years of hire and complete within 5 years of hire
- Current, unencumbered Oregon State Registered Nurse License
- BLS from AHA required. New hires will be enrolled and required to complete during orientation.
- Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without accommodation

Length of Orientation - Experienced Nurse
- External candidates: OHSU & Nursing New Employee Orientation (NEO) for about a week.
- Either Transition to Practice (TTP) Program Specialty Fellowship/Fellowship Learning Pathway or Orientation experience for 3 days-26 weeks depending on the care area. An employment service agreement may apply.
