Position Overview:
As our Director, Project & Program Management – Projects & Field Services you will be responsible for establishing and maintaining excellence in the delivery and performance of program and project management across all Field Services programs and projects within the Projects & Field Services division of BWXT Canada. This leadership role encompasses the development and maintenance of core Program and Project Management processes and procedures, as well as the training of project management personnel.

In this capacity, the Director of Project & Program Management will be responsible and accountable for: Manage the organization, performance, and operational aspects of project management within the Projects & Field Services division; Ensure accountability for project delivery performance, including profit and loss for Field Services programs and projects, encompassing parts and equipment sales; Directly manage project managers assigned to Field Services programs, fostering a culture of excellence and continuous improvement; Develop and maintain strong relationships with management and executive level customers, ensuring alignment with their strategic goals; Drive the expansion of existing Field Services business and identify new business opportunities with both existing and potential customers; Collaborate with the Projects & Field Services Management Team to ensure project operational readiness and provide oversight for active field projects; Engage regularly with customer Vice Presidents and maintain open lines of communication with senior management on the customer side; Lead the proposal development process and oversee project execution to ensure alignment with customer expectations and organizational objectives. Lead the Projects & Field Services Excellence Program (Performance Excellence; Technology Excellence; and Business Operations Excellence).

As a key member of the management team, you will implement strategies to sustain and grow the service business within this sector, ensuring that BWXT Projects & Field Services remains a leader in project delivery excellence.

Your Day to Day as our Director, Project & Program Management – Projects & Field Services:

  • Reports to the Executive Vice President, Projects and Field Services.
  • Member of the Projects and Field Services senior leadership team.
  • Typically leads a team of approximately 10-15 full-time and contract Project Managers who may be junior or senior.
  • Responsible for leading commercial negotiations for all field service contracts, resolving contractual issues and disputes.
  • This position aligns with customer Vice Presidents and has regular formal communication with customer senior management.
  • Develop and implement a winning strategy for project acquisition and customer relationship management within the Nuclear Plants sector.
  • Establish and maintain a skilled team capable of securing new projects, crafting competitive proposals, and effectively managing projects.
  • Allocate resources efficiently to meet financial targets, including gross profit and contract cash flow objectives.
  • Lead bid/no-bid decisions, review pricing strategies, and assist in contract negotiations to optimize project outcomes.
  • Conduct regular project and cost reviews to ensure alignment with financial goals and operational objectives.
  • Provide direct supervision and guidance to Project Managers overseeing key customer accounts and projects.
  • Ensure all team members receive adequate training and possess necessary qualifications, with a focus on cost, schedule management, and quality assurance.
  • Set performance goals, track metrics, evaluate team performance, and recognize achievements to drive continuous improvement.
  • Address escalated project issues with senior-level customers, providing effective resolutions and maintaining positive relationships.
  • Provide operational leadership on active projects, offering both technical expertise and commercial acumen.
  • Interface regularly with senior customer leadership to foster strong partnerships and address concerns effectively.
  • Represent BWXT as a senior manager in Joint Ventures, demonstrating leadership and promoting the company's interests.
  • Lead technical and financial challenge meetings to ensure project quality and cost-effectiveness, including pricing approvals and readiness reviews.
  • Ensure that all project activities adhere to relevant regulatory requirements
  • Develop and oversee cost center budgets and absorption forecasts, ensuring alignment with financial targets.
  • Monitor and control all cost center expenses, conducting variance analyses and implementing corrective actions as necessary.
  • Achieve approved net expense targets while optimizing cost efficiency and maximizing absorption.
  • Maintain a cost center structure that facilitates accurate determination of hourly cost rates.
  • Prepare accurate forecasts for bookings, revenue, gross profit, and project cash flow on a quarterly basis.
  • Analyze variances between actual results and forecasts, identifying and reporting causes.
  • Administer compensation, including salary reviews, bonuses, and promotions, in collaboration with the HR department.
  • Develop and maintain standard operating procedures for proposal and project management, ensuring alignment with industry best practices.
  • Drive continuous improvement of procedures through lessons learned, corrective actions, and customer feedback.
  • Foster a culture of innovation and efficiency within the department.
  • Cultivate strong relationships with customers through periodic visits and strategic initiatives.
  • Lead the development of business expansion plans and introduction of new products/services.
  • Identify potential partners and establish teaming agreements to enhance service offerings.
  • Monitor industry trends and competitive landscape, reporting on changes and opportunities.
  • Support business acquisition planning and related activities.
  • Prioritize and collaborate safety best practices into project management processes to mitigate risk.
  • Recruit, develop, and retain a high-performing team through effective leadership and talent management practices.
  • Support the implementation of tools, governance, and best practices to enhance project management effectiveness.
  • Foster collaboration and communication among Projects and Field Services management teams.
  • Prioritize customer satisfaction as the primary metric of success and ensure the voice of the customer is integrated into departmental strategies.

 

Required Qualifications:

  • Education: Completion of Post Secondary education in Engineering, or related field.
  • Experience: 15+ years of experience in a related role with a deep understanding of the nuclear energy sector, particularly within Ontario, including relevant regulations, safety protocols, environmental considerations, and industry best practices, is crucial for effective decision-making and compliance management.
  • Technical Acumen: Familiarity with the technical aspects of field service maintenance work in nuclear plants is necessary to oversee project execution and provide technical leadership. This includes knowledge of nuclear plant systems, equipment, processes, and maintenance procedures.
  • Financial Management Skills: Proficiency in financial management principles, including budgeting, forecasting, cost control, and profit optimization, is essential for achieving financial objectives and maximizing project profitability. Ability to organize, analyze and present diverse data sets of information.
  • Leadership and Team Management: Strong leadership skills are required to inspire and motivate a team of Project Managers, cultivate a culture of collaboration and accountability, and drive performance excellence. Experience in recruiting, developing, and retaining talent is also valuable.
  • Program & Project Management Expertise: Strong proficiency in complex project and change management methodologies, tools, and techniques is essential. This includes experience in developing and implementing comprehensive program/project management procedures, protocols and training; initiating, planning, executing, monitoring, controlling, and closing projects, as well as managing project risks, scope, schedule, and budget.
  • Business Development and Strategic Planning: Experience in business development, market analysis, and strategic planning is valuable for identifying growth opportunities, expanding service offerings, and developing competitive business strategies.
  • Continuous Improvement: A mindset of continuous improvement and innovation is essential for driving operational excellence and enhancing project management practices. Experience in developing and implementing process improvements and best practices is advantageous.

The base salary range for this position in Ontario (CA-ON) at the start of employment is expected to be between $$181,000 and $$225,000 per year. Subject to these considerations, the total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, such as an annual cash incentive in addition to a full range of medical, retirement, and/or other benefits.
