Primary Health Care (PHC) was founded in 1981 by Dr. Bery Engebretsen in Des Moines, IA. Our mission has remained unchanged since that time, to provide healthcare and supportive services to all, regardless of insurance, immigration status, or ability to pay.

Based on the needs of the communities we serve, PHC offers a spectrum of medical and dental services including family practice, behavioral health, HIV care and services, and pharmacy. PHC’s Homeless Support Services is the entry point for serving people experiencing homelessness in Polk County. Enabling services are available to help patients with benefits enrollment, case management, transportation, translation, and patient education. We currently have locations in Ames, Des Moines, & Marshalltown.



The Program Support Worker provides support for the various grant-funded programs within the HIV department. Support includes assistance with financial forms and procedures, administrative support, data entry, and participation in continuous quality improvement project activities that help programs meet their goals and standards. Displays excellent customer services skills with patients and in coordination with PHC team members as well as external community agencies to provide positive service experiences.

Essential Functions

  1. Acts as intake coordinator for clients/patients entering the Ryan White program, which would include responding to telephone and walk in referrals, assessing immediate needs, and making appropriate referrals to medical and/or supportive services.
  2. Maintains financial assistance program applications, renewals, and processes according to Ryan White sliding fee scale guidelines.
  3. Assists program staff with consumer involvement activities, patient education, client events, and on-going client satisfaction assessment activities.
  4. Processes laboratory bills submitted by patients on the Ryan White sliding fee scale.
  5. Enters program data and services into electronic medical record (EMR) and CareWare, maintains and runs reports upon request, and assists in the Ryan White Part B Quarterly Report.
  6. Orders and maintains office supplies, transportation and wellness cards, vouchers and bus and laundry tokens.
  7. Provides external and internal referrals to program clients.
  8. Assists with the oversight of the Ryan White Dental Voucher Program, providing day to day coordination in conjunction with the dental clinic health benefits specialist.

Qualifications You Need to Bring

Required:

  • Two years post-secondary education in related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Customer service orientation with commitment to service excellence.
  • Ability to use data effectively.
  • Proficiency using Microsoft Office applications and internet-based applications; willingness and ability to learn different software and databases.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a high-volume environment.
  • Detail oriented with accuracy.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with ability to work effectively and serve a diverse population.
  • Takes initiative with ability to work independently.
  • Willingness and ability to learn and contribute to program.
  • Willingness to listen, provide instructional feedback and take direction from Program Director and Program Managers.

Preferred:

  • Experience in HIV/AIDS care or work with other vulnerable populations.
  • Experience in a community health Center or public health.
  • Bilingual verbal and written language proficiency in English and Spanish or other languages.
  • Knowledge of community resources.
  • Experience with data reporting and manipulation.
  • Advanced computer skills, including database experience and desktop.

Your experience and skills determine your base pay. The hiring range for this position is typically $18.65 - $23.32 per hour. Candidates with extensive work experience related to this position may be considered for additional compensation up to the pay grade maximum of $27.98 per hour.
