Familiarity with tools like Microsoft Excel, Deltek Costpoint, and Earned Value Management Systems (EVMS) is typically required, along with certifications such as PMP or EVMP being advantageous. Excellent attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication set top performers apart in this role. These skills are crucial for accurately tracking project performance, managing budgets, and ensuring projects meet financial and scheduling goals.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in Program Control, and how can they be addressed?

One common challenge in Program Control is balancing multiple project deadlines while ensuring compliance with organizational and contractual requirements. Professionals often need to manage competing priorities such as cost tracking, schedule updates, and risk assessments, which can become overwhelming without strong organizational skills. Their work is essential for minimizing risks and ensuring successful project delivery, especially in industries like government contracting, construction, and IT. Program control often involves collaboration with project managers, finance teams, and stakeholders to ensure all objectives are met efficiently.

Data Consolidation and Baseline Management: Collect performance data from all work packages (engineering, production, logistics, supply-chain, PP&C, etc).
Variance & Trend Analysis: Perform schedulecost variance analysis (CPI, SPI, TCPI, ETC) each reporting period. Identify atrisk activities, rootcause drivers, and emerging trends; formulate clear correctiveaction recommendations for the Program Manager and PMO Lead. Track remediation actions and verify closure with the responsible functional owners.
Integrated Reporting & Dashboarding: Produce performance briefs and executivelevel packages that combine schedule, cost, risk, and performance metrics. Tailor reports for senior LM leadership, the Program Manager, the Australian Defence customer, and the PMO. Support senior leaders in delivering performance briefings during customer meetings and internal reviews.
CrossFunctional Coordination & Liaison: Serve as the central point of contact for all performancecontrol inquiries. Facilitate regular Controls Coordination Workshops to reinforce dataentry standards, review upcoming milestones, and surface integration issues early. Participate in Integrated Product Team (IPT) meetings, providing realtime performance insight that influences planning and tradeoff decisions.
Process Improvement & Automation: Identify opportunities to streamline data collection and ensure proper 1LMX integration for program performance and earned value reporting. Lead implementation of tools or workflow enhancements that improve data accuracy, timeliness, and visibility. Conduct periodic programcontrols audits; incorporate lessons learned into the Controls Integration Plan.
