The Program Assistant plays an essential role in maintaining a structured, safe, and supportive learning environment while fostering positive student relationships and encouraging student independence. In the absence of the special educator, the Program Assistant is responsible for supervising the classroom and maintaining established routines, behavioral expectations, and instructional activities.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Support students individually and in small groups in academic, behavioral, social, and functional skill development.
  • Assist in implementing Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), behavior intervention plans, safety plans, and classroom behavior systems under the direction of the special educator.
  • Provide support to students within both the self-contained behavior program and general education classrooms as appropriate.
  • Collaborate closely with special educators, school counselors, social workers, behavior specialists, related service providers, and classroom teachers to support student progress.
  • Utilize de-escalation strategies, positive behavior supports, and trauma-informed practices to address student needs.
  • Support students during transitions, unstructured times, lunch, recess, and other school activities as assigned.
  • Maintain a structured and supportive classroom environment that promotes safety, engagement, and positive behavior.
  • Collect behavioral and academic data as directed by the special educator or case manager.
  • Assist with classroom preparation, organization of materials, and implementation of instructional activities.
  • Supervise the behavior program classroom in the absence of the special educator by maintaining classroom routines, implementing behavior supports, and ensuring student safety and engagement.
