Job description

Temporary Summer Position

This is a temporary, summer-only position.

The City of Boston, Parks & Recreation Department offers a wide variety of summer programs, including, but not limited to, drop-in programs, golf, soccer, rugby, sports camp(s), baseball, softball programs, and much, much more.

The Recreation Summer Program Assistant will support the Recreation Program Director, Manager and Staff Assistant(s) with summer programs, including educational activities, games and drop-in activities for youth throughout the Greater Boston Neighborhoods.

Responsibilities
  • Ensures the safety of all participants and direct supervision of children in all planned activities.
  • Assists the Program Director, Manager, or Staff Assistant with the program theme.
  • Ensures children are aware of rules and daily scheduled routines.
  • Attends all staff meetings.
  • Assists in the planning and implementation of assigned program needs.
  • Assists with equipment and materials for the assigned program/event.
  • Ensures proper procedures are followed for sign-in/out of children on a daily basis.
  • Reports all accidents to the Supervisor.
  • Assumes an equal share of the regular housekeeping chores such as cleaning, preparing for daily activities, and cleaning up after projects/programs or events.
  • Remains up to date on emergency procedures and remains alert at all times.
  • Performs related work as required.
Minimum Entrance Qualifications
  • Must have strong leadership skills.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Desire and ability to work with children of all ages.
  • Demonstrated responsibility and dependability.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. in various forms.
  • Ability to sit, stand, or maintain physical activity for extended periods of time.
  • Must exhibit patience and understanding.
  • Ability to receive and follow detailed instructions.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the job.
  • Must be alert at all times, keeping safety in mind.
  • Must be capable of working under pressure in a somewhat disruptive environment.

Recreation Program Assistant(s) must commit to 20-35 hrs/wk during summer camp weeks.

Must be able to pass a Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) and Sexual Offender Record Information (SORI) checks. Boston residency required.

Terms: Union/Salary Plan/Grade: Non-Union / $17 per hour. Hours per week: 20-35.
