General Definition of Work
Children are the future of our communities, so those who want to devote their career to shaping young minds and helping kids become productive adults have an extremely important and rewarding role to play. The Community Services employees provide fun, high quality recreational opportunities and enjoyable experiences in both our after school program, and our summer camps. Community services employees assist with organizing and leading various small and larger group activities, while ensuring a safe environment. We are looking for an enthusiastic, attentive employee to lead, support, and motivate participants as they enjoy all our programs have to offer. After school programs are currently located at 5 elementary schools, providing care for approximately 190 students. Summer camps are held for 8 weeks, and offer a variety of field trips and experiences for participants, ensuing they have a fun and safe summer.
The City of Jacksonville's Recreation Department is looking for an energetic individual to perform responsible paraprofessional work assisting with a variety of special events, programs and activities in a recreation center or similar facility; does related work as required. Work is performed under regular supervision of the Recreation Center Supervisor.

This position assist with the departments before and after school program working up to 25 hours per week. Hours are generally Monday through Friday from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM and may be called upon to work from 6:30 AM to 8:30 AM when the need arises. The Recreation Program Assistant may oversee a weekend recreation rental within the Community Services Division.
The salary posted is the full hourly range for this position. The starting hourly is expected to be in the range of $16.61 - $21.59 hourly depending on qualifications.
Essential Functions/Typical Tasks
Assisting with the operation and services at a recreation center; planning and supervising special events, activities and participants; preparing and maintaining records and files.

  • Answers telephone and supplies general information or forwards to appropriate personnel.
  • Assists in organizing and supervising general and special recreational and leisure time programs and activities at the recreation center.
  • Assists with daily operation of classes and activities.
  • Assists in coordinating center activities in the areas of arts and crafts, summer, after school, educational and informational and athletic programs.
  • Prepares and maintains reservation and attendance records and reports and other regular and special records and reports.
  • Supervises the daily maintenance and security of the center, facilities and equipment; reports damages and losses.
  • Plans and supervises special recreational events in a variety of program areas.
  • Transports program participants on field trips, shopping excursions, camping trips, etc...
  • Provides information to participants and citizens concerning any upcoming activities.
  • Provides supervision during rental events of the recreation center.
  • Performs related tasks as required.

Required Education and Experience
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and 6 months to 2 years experience in organized recreational programs.
May require possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the State of North Carolina.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
General knowledge of the principles, rules, materials and equipment requirements of a variety of recreational activities; ability to give routine instructions; general knowledge of the philosophy and objectives of public recreation, psychology and sociology, and of personal health and hygiene; general knowledge of the first aid practices and techniques; ability to adhere to program standards and objectives outlined by superiors, and to lead and instruct groups in games, sports and other recreational activities; ability to resolve disputes with firmness and impartiality; ability to meet and deal tactfully with the public.
