The Medical Assistant I support the examination and treatment of patients in Medical Centers, working under the guidance of a physician or nurse. This entry-level medical assisting role offers opportunities for on-the-job training and advancement to higher-level positions upon certification.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Interview patients, record vital signs, and update patient charts.
  • Assist in managing daily patient flow as needed.
  • Provide direct patient care, perform indirect patient care activities, and conduct laboratory tests under the supervision of a physician or nurse.
  • Maintain a safe and aesthetically pleasing environment.
  • Administer vaccines, medications (IM/SC/ID/Oral), EKGs, and assist with procedures/treatments under physician supervision.
  • Perform supervised lab work upon skill sign-off by a nurse or physician based on physician orders. Prepare instrumental equipment for sterilization.
  • Adhere to Nursing Department policies and procedures.
  • Inspect equipment and supplies for proper function, safety, and expiration dates. Report malfunctioning medical equipment and safety concerns to the supervisor.
  • Ensure quality control (e.g., Glucometer, eyewash, refrigerator temperature, and autoclave) and maintain cleaning logs as required.
  • Comply with Infection Control and OSHA Regulations, including the handling and disposal of biomedical waste.
  • Handle confidential information with discretion.
  • Collaborate effectively with personnel from other departments.
  • Maintain procedure logs as required and input nursing procedures and other data into the computer system.
  • Follow up on missing results in medical records before patient appointments.
  • Be willing to work weekends, holidays, and various shifts and locations based on company needs.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the supervisor.

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to work standing up, walk, use hands to operate tools and equipment and must be able to exert regularly up to 10 pounds of force, frequently exert 30 pounds of force and occasionally exert 50 pounds of force to constantly perform the essential job functions. The employee will be frequently required to reach with hands and arms, bend, balance, kneel, crouch, crawl, push, and pull. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. The employee is subject to environmental conditions, protection from weather conditions but not necessarily from temperature changes. The worker is subject to noise; there may be sufficient noise to cause the worker to shout in order to be heard above ambient noise level.


Required Education and Experience

  • High school diploma, GED or technical school graduation is required.
  • Completion of a medical assistant training program is required.
  • Minimum of two (2+) years of Medical Assistant experience.
  • Active Medical Assistant National Certification/Registration or equivalent licensure with superior skillset (e.g., EMT, Paramedic, LPN, etc.) preferred
  • BLS/CPR certification required.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with patients and staff
  • Peripheral Intravenous (IV) training and certification preferred.
  • Proficiency in EPIC, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) highly preferred.
  • Phlebotomy certification preferred.
