What is a professional assistant?

Professional Assistants are individuals who provide administrative, organizational, and clerical support to professionals, executives, or teams within a business or organization. Their responsibilities often include managing schedules, handling correspondence, arranging meetings, preparing reports, and performing other tasks to help ensure smooth office operations. Professional Assistants play a key role in improving efficiency and allowing their supervisors to focus on higher-level responsibilities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a professional assistant?

To thrive as a Professional Assistant, you need excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and proficiency in administrative tasks, often supported by a diploma or relevant office experience. Familiarity with office software suites like Microsoft Office, calendar management tools, and sometimes basic bookkeeping systems is typically required. Strong communication, time management, and discretion are essential soft skills that set top assistants apart. These skills are vital for ensuring smooth daily operations, effective support for executives, and maintaining a professional workplace environment.

How does a professional assistant typically manage multiple priorities and adapt to changing demands throughout the workday?

Professional Assistants often juggle a variety of tasks, from scheduling meetings and managing correspondence to supporting project work. Job description

At Hart & Hickman, we're looking for a Junior Environmental Professional who's ready to take their early career to the next level. With 2-4 years of experience under your belt, you've gotten a taste of environmental consulting and you're hungry for more - more responsibility, more technical challenge, and a firm that's genuinely invested in where you're headed. At H&H, junior staff aren't treated as a number - they're treated as the next generation of leaders at the firm.

What You'll Do

  • Support and manage environmental assessment and remediation projects locally and nationally, both in the field and in the office
  • Assist with site investigations, soil and groundwater sampling, and technical reporting
  • Work alongside project managers and senior consultants on Phase I/II ESAs, vapor intrusion assessments, and NC Brownfields projects
  • Learn to navigate state and federal environmental regulatory programs in North and South Carolina
  • Participate in field activities including site inspections, sampling events, and remediation oversight - expect to spend meaningful time outdoors and on-site
  • Collaborate with and learn from a team of experienced environmental professionals

What We're Looking For

  • Bachelor's degree in Geology, Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, or a related field
  • 2-4 years of environmental consulting experience with demonstrated field and technical experience
  • Familiarity with environmental site assessment and sampling protocols. Experience with regulatory programs in the Carolinas is a plus
  • Strong communication, organization, and problem-solving skills
  • Someone who's curious, takes initiative, and wants to grow into a well-rounded consultant and leadership role over time
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, including in outdoor and field conditions

Why H&H?

  • Direct mentorship from experienced consultants and access to company leadership from day one
  • Hands-on exposure to diverse, technically challenging projects across the Carolinas and beyond
  • A clear path forward - we promote based on contribution, and our senior and mid-level staff started exactly where you are
  • A collaborative culture that values curiosity, initiative, and the people behind the work
  • Competitive compensation, performance-based bonuses, and comprehensive benefits

If you're looking for a place to learn from people who genuinely want to see you succeed, take on real responsibility early, and build a career that lasts - we'd love to connect.
