What is a production machine operator?

Production Machine Operators are skilled workers responsible for running, monitoring, and maintaining machinery used in manufacturing and production processes. They set up machines, ensure they operate efficiently, and perform quality checks on products. Operators may also troubleshoot minor mechanical issues and keep records of production output. Their role is vital for ensuring that products are made efficiently, safely, and to quality standards.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a production machine operator?

To thrive as a Production Machine Operator, you need mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, and a high school diploma or equivalent, often supplemented by on-the-job training. Familiarity with industrial machinery, safety protocols, and sometimes basic computer-controlled equipment (such as CNC machines) is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, teamwork, and reliability are important soft skills in this role. These competencies are vital to ensure efficient, safe, and high-quality production output in a manufacturing environment.

What are some common challenges faced by production machine operators and how can they be overcome?

Production Machine Operators often encounter challenges such as managing machine downtime, maintaining high-quality output under tight deadlines, and troubleshooting equipment malfunctions. Staying proactive with regular maintenance, following safety protocols, and communicating effectively with maintenance teams are key strategies to overcome these issues. Additionally, being adaptable and open to ongoing training helps operators keep up with technological advancements and improve efficiency on the production line.

What is the difference between Production Machine Operator vs Machine Setter?

AspectProduction Machine OperatorMachine Setter

Job description

Specific Role:
The Tube Laser Operator plays a key role in EMIT's Material Processing Division and is responsible for the safe, efficient operation of tube laser equipment. This role executes the daily production schedule, maintains quality across tube and structural profile cutting, manages part labeling and D365 order tracking, and ensures equipment and work areas remain clean, organized, and production-ready.
Key Accountabilities:
Production Execution
  • Execute the daily scheduled production plan on the tube laser, running assigned jobs in the correct sequence and on time.
  • Safely and efficiently load and unload tube and structural profiles to support continuous machine utilization.
  • Monitor machine performance during cutting operations and make authorized adjustments as needed to maintain production and quality standards.
  • Communicate material shortages, machine faults, or schedule concerns to the lead or supervisor promptly.
  • Complete assigned Manufacturing Orders (MOs) within expected production timeframes.

Quality Assurance
  • Inspect finished tube and structural profile parts for dimensional accuracy, cut angle, cope quality, edge condition, and overall conformance to specifications.
  • Identify, separate, and properly communicate non-conforming parts before they move to the next production operation.
  • Adjust authorized machine parameters, including cutting speed, power, focus, and rotation, as needed to maintain cut quality across varying profiles and material thicknesses.
  • Monitor tooling wear, nozzle condition, beam alignment, and overall machine performance.
  • Report recurring quality issues, material inconsistencies, or equipment concerns to the lead, supervisor, or maintenance team.

Denesting, Palletizing & Labeling
  • Safely remove finished tube and profile parts from the machine without damaging cut features or finished surfaces.
  • Label completed parts with the correct Manufacturing Order information immediately after processing.
  • Stage labeled parts on pallets or in designated containers for the next production operation.
  • Verify part identification and label accuracy before releasing material from the work area.
  • Maintain proper part organization and traceability throughout the production process.

D365 Order Management
  • Accurately scan and update Manufacturing Order status in D365 throughout the shift.
  • Open, progress, and close Manufacturing Orders as production activities are completed.
  • Maintain accurate production information to support scheduling, inventory visibility, and downstream operations.
  • Report D365 discrepancies or system issues to the appropriate lead or supervisor for resolution.

Workplace Safety & Housekeeping
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and hazard-free machine area, unload zone, and surrounding workspace.
  • Properly remove and dispose of scrap, tube offcuts, and other production waste.
  • Perform required daily equipment checks and report maintenance needs or abnormal machine performance.
  • Follow all laser safety, material handling, lifting, and equipment operating procedures.
  • Wear required PPE and immediately report safety concerns, near-misses, or equipment issues.
Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; technical training in manufacturing or fabrication preferred.
  • Little to no prior machine operating experience required; 1+ years of tube laser, CNC, or similar manufacturing equipment experience preferred.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, Manufacturing Orders (MOs), work orders, and technical drawings.
  • Basic knowledge of measurement tools, including calipers, tape measures, and gauges.
  • Familiarity with production tracking or ERP/MRP systems, such as D365, preferred.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality and accuracy.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and established production procedures.
  • Willingness and ability to learn new equipment, processes, and technology.
  • Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced manufacturing environment and meet production expectations.
  • Dependable attendance, strong work ethic, and commitment to workplace safety.
  • Ability to work independently while contributing effectively within a team environment.
  • Desire to develop new skills and grow within EMIT Technologies.
Physical and Safety Requirements:
  • Ability to lift 50-75 lbs. repeatedly throughout the shift.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, reach, and move for the duration of the workday.
  • Ability to safely handle tube, structural profiles, finished parts, and production materials.
  • Properly use required PPE at all times.
  • Follow established safety procedures when operating equipment, using tools, lifting, and handling materials.
  • Maintain awareness of surroundings and immediately report unsafe conditions or equipment concerns.
