Production Line Packer information

What does a production line packer do?

A Production Line Packer is responsible for packaging products as they come off a manufacturing or assembly line. Their duties typically include inspecting items for quality, placing products into containers or boxes, sealing and labeling packages, and preparing them for shipping. They often work in fast-paced environments to ensure products are packed efficiently and safely. Attention to detail and the ability to work quickly are important skills for this role.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a production line packer?

To thrive as a Production Line Packer, you need strong attention to detail, physical stamina, and the ability to follow instructions, often with a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with packaging machinery, conveyor systems, and basic inventory tracking software is typically required. Reliability, teamwork, and a focus on quality help individuals stand out in this fast-paced environment. These skills ensure efficient, accurate packaging and contribute to overall production goals and workplace safety.

What are common challenges faced by production line packers, and how can they be managed?

Production Line Packers often face challenges such as maintaining a fast-paced workflow, ensuring product quality, and meeting daily quotas. Repetitive tasks can lead to physical fatigue, so it’s important to use proper ergonomic techniques and take regular breaks. Clear communication with supervisors and team members helps address issues quickly and ensures smooth operations. Staying organized and attentive to detail also helps reduce errors and improve overall efficiency.

Job description

Job Title: General ProductionJob Description

This role focuses on supporting cable manufacturing operations through careful visual inspection, material handling, packing, and general production activities. You will help ensure product quality as cables come off the production line, move materials throughout the facility, and assist in various areas of the plant to keep operations running smoothly in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities
  • Perform visual inspection of cables as they come off the production line to identify defects or damage.
  • Tag broken or nonfunctional wire clearly and accurately so it can be removed from production or reworked.
  • Use a pallet jack to move raw materials, work-in-progress, and finished goods throughout the facility.
  • Palletize materials, including stacking, wrapping, and preparing products for storage or shipment.
  • Pack products according to established procedures to protect materials and ensure accurate counts.
  • Assist in other areas of the manufacturing plant as needed, including inventory, shipping, and general production tasks.
  • Perform general cleaning of work areas to maintain a safe, organized, and efficient production environment.
  • Support machine operators by handling materials, monitoring product flow, and responding to production needs.
  • Follow all safety procedures when working around large, older machinery and heavy materials.
  • Work rotating or fixed night shifts as assigned, including overtime and some Saturdays, while maintaining reliability and punctuality.
  • Lift and carry materials weighing 50 pounds or more as part of daily production and material handling activities.
Essential Skills
  • Previous manufacturing experience in a production or industrial environment.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds or more repeatedly and safely throughout the shift.
  • Ability and willingness to work overtime, including some Saturdays and extended hours (up to approximately 65 hours per week for certain night shift roles).
  • Experience using a pallet jack to move materials in a manufacturing or warehouse setting.
  • Comfort working in a fast-paced manufacturing environment with large, older machinery.
  • Basic computer savvy to follow instructions, record information, or interact with simple production systems as needed.
  • Ability to follow safety procedures and wear required protective footwear.
  • Dependable attendance and ability to work rotating shifts or straight night shift as assigned.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Machine operating experience in a manufacturing setting is a plus.
  • Experience with packing, production, or general labor roles is beneficial.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in more than one language (bilingual) is an advantage.
  • Comfort working in hot conditions during summer and cold conditions during winter.
  • Willingness to learn new tasks and move into more advanced roles over time.
Why Work Here?

You will join a growing organization that is actively expanding its facility and investing in its operations, creating opportunities to learn, take on new responsibilities, and advance your career. The environment offers substantial overtime potential and a shift differential for second shift work, supporting strong earning opportunities. You will work with a newer supervisory team that is building a fast-paced, team-oriented culture focused on continuous improvement and long-term growth.

Work Environment

The facility manufactures large cables for power companies using a unique production process and very large, older machinery. It is a fast-paced industrial environment with distinct inventory, shipping, and manufacturing departments. Conditions vary by season, with the plant being hot in the summer and cold in the winter, and the work involves handling heavy materials and operating around sizable equipment. Shifts include rotating schedules that move between day and night every three months for some roles, starting on night shift, as well as straight night shift positions running from 7:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m., Monday through Friday, with some Saturdays and significant overtime. Steel-toe footwear is required, and team members must wear long pants and work-appropriate attire suitable for an active manufacturing setting.
