They help companies develop, launch, and improve products by providing expertise in market analysis, user experience, product roadmaps, and cross-functional collaboration. These consultants may work on a project basis, helping teams identify product opportunities, streamline workflows, or coach in-house product managers to improve performance and outcomes.

What does a product management consultant do?

The job of a product management consultant is to help a company build up their products and make them more marketable to consumers. Product management consultants are usually employed by software companies, but companies launching a new product may also hire a consultant to help get the product off the ground. In this career, your responsibilities are to analyze new products, test their appeal to consumers, and forecast how well the product performs at launch. Additionally, your duties are to recommend enhancements to the product or the marketing campaign to increase consumer response and help the company sell the product.

To thrive as a Product Management Consultant, you need expertise in product lifecycle management, market analysis, and strategic planning, often supported by a degree in business or related fields. Familiarity with product management tools like Jira, Trello, and analytics platforms, as well as certifications such as Pragmatic Institute or PMI-ACP, is highly valued. Strong communication, stakeholder management, and problem-solving skills help consultants drive cross-functional alignment and deliver actionable insights. These abilities enable effective guidance, ensuring products meet market needs and organizational objectives.

They act as facilitators, helping teams establish clear goals, prioritize features, and implement best practices in product development. • Work effort may include modernizing existing systems, evaluating and recalibrating teams and processes, integrating new technologies, and providing change management to maximize value out of transformations
    • Create high-impact digital business strategies, product concepts, experience strategies, and solution roadmaps that connect consumer needs, business value, operational feasibility, and technology enablement
    • Provide expert guidance to clients, helping them move consumer digital solutions from discovery and strategy into build, launch, adoption, implementation, measurement, and ongoing optimization
  • Strategic Digital Product Leadership:
    • Lead human-centered design, service design, and product strategy methods to create user-centric digital products, services, and experiences that solve meaningful healthcare and business problems
      • Understand outside-in impact thorough market and competitor assessments
      • Identify opportunities by exploring business and user needs
      • Leverage data to inform recommendations and evaluate product outcomes
      • Develop robust business cases to secure funding and deliver ROI
    • Define and communicate product vision, value propositions, journeys, capabilities, features, business value, and success measures for digital solutions
      • Socialize business value and priorities across working teams and with executive stakeholders
    • Translate product and experience strategy into execution with cross-functional teams; support the Agile product development lifecycle from concept through delivery, adoption, and measurable business outcomes
      • Lead epic, feature and initiative definition and prioritization; then maintain a dynamic product roadmap
      • Collaborate thoroughly with all business capabilities to get the work done
  • AI-Enabled Product Innovation and Workflow Modernization:
    • Apply product strategy and human-centered design principles to identify where AI can responsibly improve experiences, employee and consumer workflows, decision-making, or operational performance
    • Contribute to the strategy, design, evaluation, or application of AI models, AI agents, chat experiences, or agentic workflows within consumer digital products, internal tools, and modernized operating models
    • Effectively manage regulatory risk by navigating responsible use guidelines and policies
  • Client Engagement and Team Enablement:
    • Lead client engagements, manage client communications, and deliver impactful presentations that effectively convey strategic priorities and solutions
    • Build and maintain solid client relationships, ensuring alignment and satisfaction with project outcomes
    • Support and coach junior team members, providing guidance and support to enhance team performance and development

The Digital Transformation Senior Consultant will also contribute to other practice-related development efforts including business development, thought leadership, colleague mentorship and other practice needs.
