Product Engineer Assistant information

What does a product engineer assistant do?

A Product Engineer Assistant supports product engineers in the design, development, testing, and improvement of products. They often help with creating technical documentation, preparing prototypes, conducting tests, and collecting data. Their role is crucial in ensuring that products meet quality standards and project requirements. They also assist with coordinating between engineering teams and other departments to facilitate smooth workflow and communication.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a product engineer assistant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Product Engineer Assistant, you need a strong background in engineering principles, technical drawing, and basic product development, often supported by a relevant associate degree or coursework. Familiarity with CAD software, product lifecycle management (PLM) systems, and data analysis tools is typically required. Organizational skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help you collaborate with engineers and cross-functional teams. These abilities ensure accurate technical support, efficient workflow, and high-quality product outcomes.

What is the difference between Product Engineer Assistant vs Product Engineer?

The Product Engineer Assistant typically supports product engineering teams with basic tasks and research, requiring relevant technical education. The Product Engineer, on the other hand, takes on more complex design and development responsibilities, often with more experience and higher qualifications. Both roles are integral in product development but differ in scope and seniority.

What are some common challenges faced by product engineer assistants when working on cross-functional teams?

Product Engineer Assistants often collaborate with engineers, designers, and project managers, which can present challenges like managing diverse communication styles and balancing competing priorities. Navigating differing perspectives while ensuring deadlines are met requires strong organizational and interpersonal skills. Proactively seeking clarification, staying organized, and building positive working relationships can help overcome these challenges and ensure successful project outcomes.

Senior Product Engineer

We are seeking a Product Engineer or Senior Product Engineer to support the development and lifecycle management of specification-grade commercial LED lighting products. This role is responsible for sustaining engineering, product improvements, engineering documentation, manufacturing support, ERP product management, compliance, and lighting controls integration.

Working within a collaborative Product Engineering team, you'll partner with manufacturing, purchasing, sales, customer service, and suppliers to ensure products remain competitive, compliant, manufacturable, and aligned with business objectives.

Key Responsibilities
  • Support sustaining engineering activities for commercial LED lighting products.

  • Drive product improvements, cost reduction initiatives, component substitutions, and lifecycle management.

  • Maintain engineering drawings, specifications, BOMs, and ERP product data.

  • Develop manufacturing documentation and support production readiness.

  • Participate in new product stage-gate reviews, ensuring manufacturability, compliance, controls integration, and successful production handoff.

  • Provide technical support to Sales, Customer Service, Purchasing, Manufacturing, and Production teams.

  • Support the integration, testing, and implementation of wired and wireless lighting control systems, including platforms such as Lutron, nLight, and Casambi.

  • Assist with product testing, certification, and compliance activities, including UL, CSA, LM79, and LM80 standards.

  • Evaluate new technologies, materials, and components to support continuous product improvement.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, suppliers, and vendors to resolve engineering challenges and improve product performance.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline (or equivalent experience).

  • 5+ years of experience in Product Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Product Development, or a similar role.

  • Advanced proficiency in SolidWorks with strong GD&T knowledge.

  • Experience designing products using fabricated metals, extrusions, castings, welding, plastics, and other manufacturing processes.

  • Understanding of commercial LED lighting systems, thermal management, and lighting performance.

  • Experience with interior and exterior lighting fixtures, including IP-rated enclosure design.

  • Familiarity with wired and wireless lighting control systems.

  • Working knowledge of UL 1598, LM79, LM80, CSA, and other lighting compliance standards.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with Revit, AGi32, or SolidWorks Composer.
  • Background in commercial, architectural, or specification-grade LED lighting.
  • Experience managing ERP product data, configurations, and engineering documentation.
  • Ideal for an Engineer II-level professional or an experienced SolidWorks designer looking to build a long-term career in commercial LED lighting.
  • Intended for experienced commercial lighting professionals with demonstrated technical leadership and product engineering expertise.
  • Ideal candidates are willing to relocate to Orlando, Florida and have the potential to advance into an Engineering Manager position within the next 4–5 years.
