How much do process simulation jobs pay per year?
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Process Simulation position, and why are they important?
To thrive in Process Simulation, a strong background in chemical engineering, process modeling, and analytical thinking is essential, often supported by a degree in engineering or a related field. Expertise with simulation software such as Aspen HYSYS, CHEMCAD, or MATLAB, and familiarity with process control systems, are highly valued, along with relevant certifications. Effective communication, problem-solving, and collaboration skills help professionals convey complex concepts and work efficiently with multidisciplinary teams. These qualifications are crucial for creating accurate process models, optimizing operations, and supporting evidence-based decision-making in industrial environments.
What does a typical day look like for someone working in Process Simulation?
A typical day in Process Simulation often involves developing, testing, and refining process models to optimize manufacturing or chemical processes. You’ll collaborate with engineers, plant operators, and project managers to gather data, validate simulations, and ensure alignment with production goals. Regular responsibilities may include running simulations on specialized software, analyzing results, and presenting findings and recommendations to stakeholders. The role tends to balance independent analytical tasks with team-oriented problem-solving, providing both technical challenges and opportunities for cross-functional communication.
What is a Process Simulation job?
A Process Simulation job involves using software tools to model, analyze, and optimize industrial processes in industries like chemical, manufacturing, and energy. Engineers in this role create virtual models to test different scenarios, improve efficiency, reduce costs, and ensure safety. They work with simulation software such as Aspen Plus, HYSYS, or MATLAB to predict system performance before physical implementation. This helps companies make data-driven decisions and improve overall process reliability.

Rening Technology provides technical expertise, operational support, commercial support, process optimization, new technology development and process design support to Marathon's renery system.
The Process Design Technologist role is the main conduit for identifying and implementing projects and processes to improve Marathon's Processing Units to achieve greater performance and eciency. The Process Design Technologist will work with Process Technologists and Refinery Unit Engineers along with external licensors and vendors with the purpose of identifying innovative solutions to drive renery performance improvements.
This position will report to the Process Engineering Technology Manager. This position maybe based in any of Marathon's 16 renery locations, or the Findlay, Ohio or San Antonio, Texas headquarters. Travel requirement for this position is approximately 25%.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provides process engineering technical leadership to ensure clarity and accuracy of design against project goals and objectives. Proactively engages with Refinery Technical Service engineers, refinery and corporate environmental, and Operations to ensure scope clarity and accuracy against project goals and objectives. Collaborates with other engineering disciplines. Identify and develop modifications to optimize the process, improve reliability, improve safety, improve sustainability, or improve environmental performance. Project size may range from small single unit modifications to large capital projects involving multiple refinery process units. Drives assigned scoping studies and provide leadership for idea generation in the pre-conceptual phase. Perform process simulations and calculations to support equipment sizing, hydraulic analysis, and energy optimization.
May lead process engineering for comprehensive Conceptual phase content. Works with Asset Development Engineers to develop and understand business case(s) and associated economic drivers. Develops project economics and work with Engineering to complete decision support packages. Owns process related deliverables and define a solid scope in Feasibility for effective Definition stage deliverables. Supports detailed engineering resulting in complete "Issued for Construction" drawings that maintain design against prior stage definition, overall project goals, and Implementation stage objectives. Provides process input for project pre-startup review and startup. Works with unit engineers to organize and conduct unit performance tests to determine if benefits are realized.
Provides oversight to engineering contractors performing process work for project development. Develops technical and scope documents to support process engineering oversight of assigned projects. Leads development of PFDs, P&IDs, PSM activities and reviews, control narratives, and cause & effect documents from initial design. Participates in development and implementation of operator training and operating manuals. Provides leadership for the development, maintenance and overall quality of other typical process engineering deliverables, including process design basis, heat and mass balances, process simulations, equipment sizing and design, ISBL/OSBL (inside battery limits, outside battery limits) interface conditions, and other items relevant to assigned projects.
Maintains working relationships with third-party licensors, technology vendors, catalyst/chemical suppliers, and engineering contractors to provide technical direction to refinery project teams and during contract revisions / negotiations. Providing technical guidance related to operating procedures, environmental compliance, management of change, safety and relief system operation and design. Ensures adherence to process engineering guidelines, refining standard practices, and supporting process hazard reviews and incident investigations.
Advises engineers and drive complex troubleshooting efforts that span multiple units / multiple sites. Interfaces with other departments and disciplines to develop repair/redesign options to address acute or chronic operating problems that span broad or chronic refinery-wide problems such as product quality issues, corrosion and fouling mechanisms, and equipment failures. Draws on learnings to influence changes to refining-wide corporate standards and guidance related to design, equipment care, and process operation in support of health, environmental, and process safety objectives.
Collaborates with commercial, feedstock/products organizations, operations, and refinery process engineers to identify and accomplish site and regional optimization strategies by changing operation of existing assets. Recommends new operating conditions; understand advanced process control concepts and participate in development of new control strategies for profit or efficiency improvement. Assesses viability of producing new products / meeting new specifications for entry into markets. Works with Asset Development Engineers and Refinery Project Teams to develop and understand business case(s) and associated economic drivers.
