We are on the hunt for a current second to fourth-year undergraduate, or graduate student to join our team for the Summer 2027 as a Process Engineering Intern and help bring Burnham to the next level! We expect the internship experience to achieve 3 high-level goals: (1) to prepare the candidate for the future by presenting real situations, challenges, and opportunities which besides requiring value-added effort, ultimately help the candidate become more knowledgeable in regards to their future career path, (2) an output of the prior, support individuals and teams at Burnham, helping us move towards our goal of transforming waste management, and last (3) help support a talent pipeline to Burnham through subsequent internships, returning to the team post-graduation, and recommendations to others.

  • This is an 8-week (minimum), paid position, with work hours up to 40 hours/week.
  • This is an in-person role and is based in Raleigh, North Carolina, along with the rest of our Engineering team
  • Travel, up to 30% and for 2 weeks at a time, may be required 


Responsibilities

  • Lead research studies for new processes and/or equipment; including summary reports and presentations
  • Lead and support ad hoc or long-term engineering projects, including weekly action register reviews and status reports
  • Develop, review and implement tools to support areas such as project origination and development, technology and/or equipment selection, process improvement and optimization, and quality management.
  • Support coordination with facility operations teams - attend daily start-up meetings and plan activities supporting areas such as compliance, documentation, procurement, laboratory operations, and process evaluation
  • Support performance assessment and risk analysis activities (process, equipment, budget, timeline, etc.)
  • Conduct / participate in calls with engineering, equipment, and regulation firms.



Qualifications

  • Self-accountability, working at times in an unstructured environment.
  • Ability to work individually and in a group setting.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills; unafraid to pick up the phone and call people to get results
  • Ability to distill information from multiple sources into concise, actionable thinking.
  • A strong sense of personal responsibility and ownership of work product.
  • Punctual, disciplined, and detailed oriented
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Demonstrated interest in renewable energy or environmental engineering or studies preferred.
  • Current student (2nd - 4th year undergrad or graduate student) with a demonstrated history of academic achievement in engineering (Chemical and Mechanical disciplines preferred).
  • Desire to join a high-energy, early-stage, execution-oriented team. Experience with small teams or start-up organizations preferred.
