Boeing Defense, Space & Security (BDS) Space Mission Systems (SMS) is seeking a Senior Engineering Manager to lead our Starfire Optical Range (SOR) Engineering team in Albuquerque, NM on the Kirtland Airforce Base. The SOR Engineering team leads the development of advanced technologies to support the United States Space Force in the area of R&D of Space Domain Awareness.

This Senior Engineering Manager will set the strategy, lead execution, and support employee development of a multidisciplinary team of 50+ engineers, technicians and managers. In addition to being senior engineering leader on-site you’ll also be the deputy SOR site lead helping to execute the various programs in the portfolio.

What you’ll do
  • Lead and develop a diverse team of engineers, technicians and first-line managers working across electro-optical systems, sensors, algorithms, and integration/test.

  • Establish and improve engineering processes, tools, and metrics that drive technical excellence, on-contract performance, and continuous improvement.

  • Provide technical oversight of architectures, designs, analyses, integration/test plans, and verification/validation activities.

  • Build strong relationships with customers and stakeholders; represent SOR Engineering in technical and program reviews and executive briefings.

  • Responsible for cost, schedule and technical performance.

  • Acquires resources for projects and processes, provides technical management of suppliers and leads process improvements.

  • Acquire and allocate resources; ensure training, skills development, and readiness to execute statements of work.

  • Foster an inclusive, psychologically safe culture where employees feel empowered to raise safety, quality, and schedule concerns early.

  • Champion career growth, mentoring, succession planning, and talent pipelines; attract and retain top engineering talent.

  • A systems-oriented leader with deep electro-optical domain knowledge and a track record of delivering complex hardware/software systems in a mission-driven environment.

  • Skilled at building high-trust teams, developing leaders, and scaling organizations through clear goals, coaching, and data-informed decisions.

  • Comfortable balancing strategic direction with hands‑on technical oversight and rigorous program execution.

This position is expected to be 100% onsite.The selected candidate will be required to work onsite at the listed location.

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):
  • This position requires a current Tier 5 (T5), formerly known as a Single Scope Background Investigation (SSBI) (U.S. Citizenship required), or enrolled in a Continuous Vetting program within the last 5 years.

  • Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited course of study in engineering, engineering technology (includes manufacturing engineering technology), chemistry, physics, mathematics, data science, or computer science.

  • 5+ years of experience leading or managing an engineering project or team.

  • Product development and systems engineering experience.

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):
  • Experience working with electro-optics, including lasers (CW, Pulse), frequency metrology, laser stabilization, electro-optics, opto-mechanics, optical cavities, and/or offset locking

  • Experience in a software development environment

  • Excellent communications skills, verbal and written.

  • Ability to effectively communicate at all levels of management, customers, and partners.

  • Previous management experience.

  • Ability to build a safe environment of inclusion, transparency, and trust.

  • Leadership skills to lead and influence positive outcomes.

  • Previous experience in leading, mentoring, and engaging individuals and teams.

  • Experience providing active mentorship and career guidance.
