POSITION OVERVIEW:
As part of our continued growth, Startec Compression & Process is currently recruiting for a Senior Applications/Process Engineer to join our team at our Glenmore Office (Suite 240, 4000 Glenmore Court SE, Calgary, AB, T2C 5R8).The Senior Applications/Process Engineer focuses on process design and optimization of various types of equipment and systems as well as cost estimate and proposal preparation. This dynamic role also incorporates oversight of designs and proposals prepared by junior applications engineers.
Reporting to the Applications Engineering Manager, the Senior Applications/Process Engineer is involved in conducting optimization, sizing, and estimation of appropriate equipment using various tools. The Senior Applications/Process Engineer plays a crucial role in process design and troubleshooting for multiple bids and projects, continuously striving to optimize performance. Additionally, this position demands active participation in the development and maintenance of tools and procedures, contributing to the overall efficiency and effectiveness of the department. The role requires a blend of technical knowledge, analytical skills, effective communication, and leadership skills, providing a unique opportunity for learning and professional growth within the engineering field.
KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS (KPI):
PROCESS OPTIMIZATION (Weighting 30%)Process Simulation
  • Create process simulations in Symmetry for various different systems or technologies
  • Optimize process simulations based on client requirements to meet required specifications
  • Investigate opportunities to increase cost effectiveness of the simulated system or reduce power requirements to improve project CAPEX and/or OPEX
  • Investigate possible technologies or processes available to provide the client’s product requirements
Process Equipment Sizing
  • Use compressor sizing software to accurately size compressors based on project specifications and requirements.
  • Conduct sizing of separators, fractionation towers, accumulators and scrubbers using in-house tools.
  • Ensure accuracy in input parameters and assumptions used in the sizing calculations.
  • Document the equipment sizing and selection process, including all calculations, assumptions, and final recommendations.
Communication, Coordination & Documentation
  • Effectively communicate equipment specifications and requirements to the project team, procurement department, or external vendors as needed.
  • Coordinate with other departments or teams to ensure seamless integration of the selected equipment into the overall system or project.
 COMMERCIAL AND TECHNICAL PROPOSAL DEVELOPMENT (Weighting 30%)Inquiry Analysis
  • Review specific customer requirements, technical specifications, and any other crucial details mentioned in inquiries.
  • Engage with customers as necessary to gather all relevant information and clarify any ambiguities in their requirements.
  • Ensure a complete understanding of the customer’s needs and expectations.
Subvendor Management & Estimation
  • Inquiry development and management for buyout equipment and systems
  • Develop packaging plans based on required equipment and sizing
  • Assemble full system costs including material, labour and outsourced items
Proposal Development
  • Develop detailed technical proposals for the offered equipment or packages.
  • Outline compliance with requirements, deviations and comments or exceptions.
  • Complete technical clarifications on submitted proposals.
 TECHNICAL AND ESTIMATING SUPPORT (Weighting 30%)Technical Support
  • Provide technical guidance and expertise to the applications team, assisting with complex problem-solving, troubleshooting, and solution design.
  • Support team members in addressing customer inquiries, resolving technical issues, and ensuring customer satisfaction.
  • Review  process simulations to assist with optimization and ensure client requirements are met
  • Review compressor, vessel and exchanger to ensure correctness and cost effectiveness
  • Review and approve technical designs, ensuring they meet customer requirements and adhere to industry standards.
Estimating Support
  • Review of vendor costs and selection, material estimates and office and shop labour estimates
  • Support continuous improvement of estimating tools and philosophies
Documentation & Reporting
  • Ensure that all RFQ documentation and vendor communications are properly filed and documented in accordance with Startec’s procedures.
  • Prepare summary reports of the RFQ process, highlighting any significant findings, discrepancies, or recommendations.
CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT (Weighting 10%)Knowledge Sharing & Training
  • Participate in the regular review of existing procedures and work instructions, ensuring they are up to date and in line with current best practices.
  • Suggest modifications and updates to procedures to enhance clarity, compliance, and efficiency.
  • Contribute to the development of training materials and resources to support the implementation of new tools and procedures.
  • Participate in knowledge sharing sessions, workshops, and training programs to disseminate information about updated tools and procedures.
 
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Chemical or Mechanical Engineering degree (or equivalent qualifications and experience) with P.Eng. designation from APEGA.
  • 10+ years experience in the energy industry, a focus in gas processing or packaging is required.
  • Knowledge of gas processing systems such as mechanical refrigeration, gas sweetening, renewable natural gas processing, hydrogen/helium processing
  • Experience using process simulation software such as Symmetry considered a strong asset.
  • Strong technical, analytical, and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Proven ability to collaborate in a team environment
  • Excellent organizational skills.
