Process Engineer Process Engineer information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Process Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Process Engineer, you need a solid background in chemical, mechanical, or industrial engineering, often supported by a relevant degree and sometimes PE certification. Familiarity with tools like AutoCAD, process simulation software (such as Aspen Plus or HYSYS), and Six Sigma methodologies is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, analytical thinking, and effective communication skills help you collaborate across departments and drive process improvements. These capabilities are crucial for optimizing production, ensuring safety, and achieving operational efficiency in manufacturing or industrial settings.

What are some common challenges a Process Engineer might face when implementing process improvements in a manufacturing environment?

Process Engineers often encounter resistance to change from team members who are accustomed to existing workflows. Additionally, they must balance cost constraints with the need for efficiency and quality improvements. Coordinating across departments—such as production, quality assurance, and maintenance—can present communication challenges, requiring strong collaboration skills. Successful Process Engineers address these issues by engaging stakeholders early, clearly communicating the benefits of changes, and using data-driven approaches to demonstrate positive outcomes.

What are Process Engineers?

Process Engineers are professionals who design, implement, control, and optimize industrial processes, often within manufacturing or chemical plants. They work to improve efficiency, safety, and quality by analyzing workflows and modifying equipment or systems. Process Engineers commonly collaborate with other engineers and technicians to troubleshoot problems and develop solutions that enhance production. Their work is critical for ensuring that operations run smoothly, cost-effectively, and in compliance with safety and environmental standards.

What is the difference between Process Engineer Process Engineer vs Process Engineer?

Job description

Quanta Power Solutions brings together the industry-leading capabilities and resources of Quanta's operating companies to deliver complete EPC solutions. Our integrated approach spans power generation, battery energy storage, renewables, transmission, substation, and underground infrastructure — from concept to commissioning, we execute complex power infrastructure projects with the speed, certainty, and operational excellence our customers depend on.

At Quanta Power Solutions, we are driven by a culture of safety, integrity, and disciplined execution — and we're building a team that shares that commitment.

The Process Engineer III is responsible for executing and supporting the design and development of process systems for power generation projects involving simple cycle gas turbine installations, combined cycle gas turbine power plants, and reciprocating engine power plants.

Project Execution

  • Lead or support the process engineering scope through project phases from conceptual/feasibility studies through detailed design, procurement support, and commissioning.
  • Develop and maintain process design basis documents, equipment lists, line lists, and tie-in schedules.
  • Prepare and review equipment datasheets and specifications for procurement packages including pumps, vessels, tanks, heat exchangers, blowers, and packaged systems (water treatment, chemical feed, instrument air).
  • Track engineering deliverables, manage scope changes within the process discipline, and coordinate interfaces with other disciplines and with vendors/OEMs.

System Design

  • Design balance of plant systems including demineralized water treatment (RO, CEDI, mixed bed), closed cooling water, service water, instrument and plant air, chemical dosing, and wastewater handling.
  • Specify tank sizing (atmospheric per API 650, pressure vessels per ASME BPCV Sec VIII) and evaluate material selection for service conditions including aqueous ammonia, sulfuric acid, sodium hypochlorite, and other plant chemicals.
  • Specify fluid turbomachinery such as centrifugal pumps and natural gas compressors for meeting plant demand.
  • Support air permitting efforts by developing emissions estimates for gas turbines, duct burners, auxiliary boilers, and emergency engines.
  • Interface with environmental consultants on SCR/CO catalyst performance guarantees, ammonia slip limits, and continuous emissions monitoring requirements.
  • Provide process data inputs for noise studies, wastewater discharge permits, and chemical storage secondary containment design.

Drawings

  • Create and maintain Process Flow Diagrams showing major equipment, flow paths, design heat and mass balance conditions, and key operating parameters.
  • Develop Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams from studies through detailed design, incorporating control schemes, isolation philosophy, relief device locations, utility connections, and tagging per company standards.
  • Conduct P&ID reviews (HAZOP participation, constructability, operability) and manage redlines through successive revisions.
  • Coordinate P&ID content with instrumentation, piping, electrical, and structural disciplines to ensure consistency across deliverables.

Education, Certifications, & Experience Requirements

  • Education: Bachelor or Master of Science in Chemical, Mechanical, or Petroleum Engineering from an accredited university.
  • Certification: Professional Engineering (PE) registration is highly preferred or may be required. Must be able to obtain PE in project states.
  • Experience: Minimum 4 years of relevant industrial experience in chemical, petroleum, or power process design engineering, preferably in an EPC environment.

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong understanding of power generation systems, including gas turbines. Combined cycle knowledge a plus.
  • Working knowledge of process simulation and hydraulic modeling tools (e.g., GT Pro, PIPE-FLO).
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD Plant3D/P&ID preferred.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Familiarity with industry codes, standards, and best practices.

Soft Skills

  • Excellent communication and documentation skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to sit, stand, or walk for extended periods.
  • Employee may be required to visit job sites, field offices, and customer locations

  • Competitive Compensation
  • 401(k) Retirement Plan
  • Holiday Pay
  • Paid Time Off (PTO)
  • Comprehensive Health Coverage
  • Pet Insurance
  • Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
  • Professional Development
  • Tuition Assistance
  • Employee Discount Program
