Position Overview

Working under the direction of the Edmonton Plant Engineer, the Process Engineer is responsible for providing engineering and project management services to primarily Mechanical/Chemical projects designed to support the continued safe operation of the Edmonton Chemical Plant.  The incumbent will be responsible for developing projects from the point of scoping, planning, executing, monitoring & controlling, and closure.  The incumbent is jointly responsible with the Maintenance and Operations groups for the successful completion and implementation of capital projects. 

Job Responsibilities

Environmental, Health and Safety 

  • Demonstrate leadership and contribute positively to the facility safety culture through active, positive participation in EHS safety programs and initiatives. 


Technical Ability/Problem Solving 

  • Be responsible for the planning, organizing, cost control and implementation of approved projects.  These projects will include purchasing new mechanical equipment, replacing mechanical equipment already in use at site, modifications or additions to existing equipment and implementing changes through CF’s Management of Change (MOC) system. 
  • Will be expected to provide technical support to the Maintenance and Operations groups during the field installation of assigned projects.  Installations will occur both during normal routine situations and plant turnarounds / outages. 
  • Prepare cost estimates for projects to be added to the capital, maintenance, and turnaround budgets 
  • Prepares equipment fabrication specifications for project requirements that comply with all regulatory code and company internal requirements 
  • Provides engineering support to other groups on site. 
  • Recommendations, assumptions and calculations may be reviewed by a more senior authority but would generally be assumed to be correct. 
  • Will use industry recognized principles for project management when developing and executing assigned projects 


Communication, Co-ordination & Reporting 

  • Responsible to work effectively with all parties in the Engineering department.  Is expected to maintain open lines of communication with the Engineering, Maintenance, Operations, and Project Contractors groups at all times in order to successfully execute assigned projects.  
  • Ensures plant and equipment information is updated where required. 
  • Responsible to maintain a continuing liaison with all Plant personnel who share responsibility for the function of these areas where there is engineering involvement.  
  • Prepares regular project and monthly reports presenting the results of studies, proposals and the status of work in progress where required. 
  • Responsible to either assist or lead efforts to resolve conflicts that may occur on assigned projects.  Will seek to meet all stakeholder requirements on projects while being able to keep projects on track. 
  • Strong written and verbal skills are essential in this position. 
Additional Job Responsibilities

Self/Staff Development 

  • Maintains ongoing familiarization with all procedures, equipment and processes through personal initiative. Identifies areas for self-improvement and works with their supervisor to initiate training in these areas. 
  • Expands technical competency into the areas of process piping, pumps, vessels, heat exchangers and related mechanical equipment; and modifications or additions to existing equipment.  Able to develop preliminary isometric drawings. Maintain familiarity with the application of ABSA, CSA B51, ASME Code Section I, VIII, IX, B31.1 and B31.3 are necessary in the performance of these duties. 


Productivity & Adaptability 

  • Will generally be responsible for the activities associated with several assignments and studies of varying scope and priority.  Must manage the activities of each to insure orderly and timely progress occurs on all jobs, including Procurement and Cost Control. 
  • The process engineer, in the execution of assigned projects, will work closely with vendors, consultants and contacts both inside and outside the company to maintain effective project execution.  
  • Support the initiatives of Continuous Improvement through teamwork and the application of Quality Planning and Improvement Principles to the routine performance of duties. 

Other 

  • Understands and complies with established departmental processes and procedures designed to support internal controls efforts.  Identifies and brings to the attention of department management internal controls deficiencies. 
  • Will be expected to provide assistance in plant outages and / or turnarounds when requested by the Edmonton Plant Engineer or the Site Leader.  This may include working in a supervisory role during non-standard working hours. 
  • Can be called on at times to be designated a site contact for outside contractors working on our plant site.  Would then be expected to follow all requirements as specified in the company’s Contractor Management Program. 
  • While most projects will be mechanical in nature, some other projects (i.e. EHS or I/E in nature) can be assigned for the growth and development of the incumbent 
Minimum Qualifications
  • BSc in Chemical or Mechanical engineering from a recognized University, APEGA registered P.Eng.
  • 5+ years’ experience in a plant environment, preferably in the chemical processing or manufacturing industry.  Certifications in Project Management are not required but are an asset in this position.   
  • Skilled with multiple computer applications, including databases, spreadsheets, word-processing, project management, presentations, and relevant technical software - proficiency in AutoCAD-2D is required.  
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently.   
  • Experienced in mechanical design projects associated with utility systems, material handling, structural, and process piping.  
  • Must know engineering/pipe and equipment specifications.  
  • Knowledgeable with SAP is a definite asset  

Certification of Competency: 

POSITION SCOPE/CONTRIBUTION: 

  • The incumbent will typically be leading projects worth up to $500,000 with some projects worth up to $1MM. They can also be brought in to assist more senior engineers on larger projects where required.  They would be responsible for execution and cost control on projects.  Routine duties and successful accomplishment of projects requires frequent utilization of both internal and external contacts.  This position requires an ability to carry out safety assignments, plant assignments and assist plant supervision in where required.

  • Physical: Able to wear a full or half-face respirator. Walking, driving, standing, lifting, sitting, carrying, pushing, pulling, climbing, balancing, at heights, stooping, kneeling, reaching, fingering, talking, hearing and seeing.  Work in all weather conditions for field scoping and commissioning. 
  • Aptitudes: Must possess the ability to understand the meaning of words and their ideas, as well as instructions and their underlying principles.  Perform arithmetic operations quickly and accurately and possess eye-hand motor coordination.
